I'm putting together a box for my son's 21st Birthday which he'll celebrate while he's at sea. We wanted to include some short video birthday wishes, but I've heard it may not be OK to send a flash drive to the ship. Are flash drives OK or should I send a disk instead?

If I had to guess, I would say that a flash drive might be risky. Only because in the wrong hands could be considered a breech of security. Maybe we should post this question in the carrier group or one of the other groups related to ships at sea.

To play it safe, you better just send a DVD. I think the issue is that the media you send should not be something that information could not be transferred onto.

Mr. Gramza,
Thank you for contacting with your questions. At this time flash drives are not authorized for use in government computers. Please advise your parents to not include these devices in care packages.
Thank you, please let me know if you have any additional questions.

I understand that in their own laptop it's ok, but why take the risk of someone "borrowing" it and using it in a govt. computer. I would just hate to see someone get in trouble for using it. Use your best judgement in sending it.
