PIR Security
My son Nicholas had his PIR on 13/03/09. The ceremony was beyond belief. My wife and I took the 06:30 shuttle from the Marriott Courtyard. Cost for the trip was $3.00 per person each way. Company name was Metro Yellow and Metro Checker. Some other companies charge $5.00 per person. Our transport arrived at the main gate around 06:50. We by passed all of the vehicles waiting to enter the base and unloaded at the security shack. Our ID's were checked, our names crossed off the list and hands stamped. We were then allowed to walk to the Parade Hall. (4 short blocks)
A second security check point is for those people arriving by auto. Autos park in the chapel lot and are directed to the security check point in the building to the South of the Nex. Many of the people walking from the main gate see these people walking from the parking lot and follow them into the building. They then must endure a second security check. The lines are long and snake like. It is not necessary for those who check in at the main gate to enter this building.
The Parade Hall is located East of the chapel. The building is big and long. Walking toward the building you will see doors in the center with a garage door to the left and the right. You are required to turn left and walk to the North side of the building where you will enter.
Each division is marked with seating in front of each. Remember the early bird gets the worm. He may have a sore behind but the choice of seating and the PIR make it all worth while.

My wife is handicapped and although she can walk, she can't walk 4 blocks. If I drive in,how far is the walk after we get thru the check points? Is there anything set up for handicapped people? Like parking and seating in the hall?

I expect we will see each other. My wife, son and I will also be staying at the Courtyard Marriot. We are planning to go to a "meet n greet" next door at Anastasias on Thursday night between 1800-2000 hrs. We plan to be in town by around 1700, maybe we can get in contact that evening.

Permalink Reply by Troy Gunn (dghtr Ship02/Div951) on November 22, 2010 at 5:39pm Here's a strange issue for anyone out there. My son is at RTC right now, graduating in about 4 weeks. When he sent the usual Navy form letter his first week, it of course indicated my wife and I were on the list to attend PIR. However, he didn't use our full names but listed us as "MOM" and "DAD." Anyone have any insight? Are they going to let us in? What should we do if anything? Thanks.
