My grandson has been in the Navy for almost a year without any mention of the "signing bonus" the recruiter "promised.   Has any one else had this problem or do I not under stand the procedure?

Also, he is now stationed on a foreign military base which doesn't have a chow hall.  Do you know of any one in a similar situation who is getting extra money to eat on?  His mother is going broke trying to keep him in food money.

I'm not sure what the policy is now on bonus payments...I know that all signing bonus and re-enlistment payments were halted sometime ago due tot he budget situation and economy...think some have been re-instated. As far as promised bonus...was it on paper? Unless on paper I certainly would be cautious about any verbal promise.

Have no idea about the chow situation...he has to have a chain of command to answer to....I'd ask....

What is your grandson's rate? If he was promised a bonus, it will be in his enlistment package that he needs to verify via his electronic service record. His command should walk him through how to view it. If it is in writing, he will need to route a request chit through his chain of command and he will get it. As far as chow, he should be getting Commuted Rations to offset his personal cost for food. This is in addition to his base pay. Many of our junior sailors have trouble with budgeting and that may also be a source of his not having enough money. I hope this information helps.

Mr Newell, thank you so much for your response. The information is exactly what I was looking for. Kyle is an E2. He has finished Boot, A school, C school, and F school. I don't know how much he knows about the procedures in question so I have passed your response on to his parents. You are right, budgeting is a big deal for him since he hasn't had to do it before. Hopefully he will learn some life long lessons here. Thanks again and God bless,
Dan Colburn
I'm glad I could be of assistance. As a whole, we sailors do our very best to take care of each other. Good luck, and please do not hesistate to ask if you have any other questions.

If there is no messing facility, he should be receiving an allowance for meals. It won't be enough for steak and lobster every night, but is should be enough to supplement his base pay. If he is not receiving this allowance, he should check with the local disbursing (pay) office to find out why.
It was almost two years before my son got his signing bonus. Of course he had a lot ot training to do as he is in the Flying Navy, but he did get it.
