Navy Dads

Alright, so my wife was injured in Boot and the Corpsman are thinking surgery and discharge.

Question 1

I know she wont be allowed visits if she's in the "recovery unit", but can she put in for Holiday Leave?? (already contacted the PAO and waiting on them)

Question 2

I read on "Navy Moms", one of the family's recruits was medically discharged for an injury and was told he would receive E5 pay for 5-years. How true is this and does this include BAH

any insight or direction is very much appreciated!

If it is a service connected disability, then she will receive VA benefits for 5 years.  It will be based on E5 pay, with no other benefits (ie BAH).  She would also be eligible for schooling to allow her to do a job that doesn't intefere with her disability, but only if she is authorized VA benefits.  At the 5 year point, she will have another VA medical review board, at that point they will extend it for an additional 5 years, or they will stop the payments.

What you need to do is post the disability payment question at this website,

Dave M will probably respond.  He works for the VA and knows his stuff.  I haven't found anyone more knowledgeable than him.  Warning, that website is not like this one.  They are really hard core.  So stick to the facts, and leave your own personal views out of it.  Veterans work with facts, and they keep the personal views out of the equation.

Per the Holiday leave.  I bet she will be authorized it.  She will be on convalescent leave, so all she needs to do is ask.  I had a gal in the same position, and she was authorized it.

Lastly, you may not think there is anything wrong with it, but to a veteran, that purple heart medal as your avatar is a total slam to a veteran.  Unless you have personally earned that medal, then you shouldn't be using it.  If you happen to use that on that other website, you will get about 100 slams in less than an hour and the focus will be on you, and not your question.  My recommendation is put something else there.  Again, if you earned it, that's fine, but my guess is you haven't.  My own view is it's a total slam.  Just saying....

Joe,

Your profile never speaks of you having a purple heart, and having done web forums for sooo long, I have seen countless times when people, usually young adults, think that by earning a purple heart or a Medal of Honor on a video game means they can do it on a military website.  Those medals are meant to honor our military.  Frankly, you are one of the few that I have ever heard of actually earning that medal.

Just in case I was wrong, I did state "Unless you have personally earned that medal, then you shouldn't be using it".   I further clarified by saying "Again, if you earned it, that's fine, but my guess is you haven't".

You may want to add that you have earned that medal in your profile.  Many veterans will call you out for it.  You should see on some of the website when someone post they have the Medal of Honor.  Man that starts the thread a rockin....

You don't have to thank me for trying to preserve the honor you earned or the countless others that actually lost their lives only to earn that medal.  It's what most veterans try to do....
