Navy Dads

My son is planning on enlisting after first of the year. And I was wondering what kind of stuff He can bring to bootcamp. Or where I could find a list. Would a laptop be allowed? Or would he even have time to use it? Where would he go for boot and where would graduation be? ect. ect.

the Navy only has one location for boot camp: The Great Lakes Naval Training Center, which is located on the western shore of Lake Michigan, halfway between Chicago and Milwaulkee.

Here is a list of stuff you can bring to Navy boot camp:

One pair of prescription glasses (most recent pair) and reading glasses. However these will be taken and you recruit will be issued what they call birth control black framed glasses. You will not be allowed to wear contact lenses during recruit training. If only contact lenses are worn (e.g., a recent pair of glasses is not available), you may wear the contact lenses to RTC and bring a contact lens case with a small bottle of solution for cleaning, disinfecting, and storage. Military glasses will be issued during the first few days of in-processing and contact lens wear will then no longer be permitted.
Money – maximum of $50 (you won’t need more than that)
Light sweater/jacket for winter months
Completed Direct Deposit Sign-Up (Standard Form 1199A).
Check book and ATM card
Photo Identification/ Drivers license
Two pairs of clean socks
Prescription drugs with identifying prescription labels
Small Bible
One pair of athletic footwear (running shoes) if size 5 or smaller or 17 or larger or greater than EE in width. (No high top running shoes!)
Social Security Card
Two pair clean underwear (males)
Six white cotton panties (females)
One full cup bra (females)
One sports bra if 40 DD or larger (females)
One pre-paid calling card
Conservative nightwear/lingerie (females) - Note: Female lingerie will be inspected upon reporting, and if within specifications, will be authorized for wear.
Basic makeup (females)(due to time constraints and a lack of personal storage space, new recruits are not permitted to wear makeup except during photographs, family night, and on graduation liberty. No glass items, including mirrors, are permitted).

Recruits - Do not bring:

food, candy, chewing gum or alcoholic beverages;
cigarettes or other tobacco products;
sharp objects, scissors, fingernail files or manicure kits;
lighter fluid, non-disposable lighters, matches, aerosol cans, perfumes, colognes, liquid shoe polish or any articles in glass containers;
radios, books, tape recorders, non-prescription or prescription sunglasses, musical instruments, sports equipment or cameras;
firearms, explosives, ammunition, knives or weapons of any kind;
calculators or electronic games;
lewd or obscene photographs or literature;
cards or dice;
non-prescription medicine, drugs or vitamins;
low-cut or two-piece swimsuits;
illegal drugs or drug paraphernalia;
Jewelry (except for a small religious medal, wedding and/or engagement ring and a conventional, conservative watch). While in uniform you're not allowed to wear any other jewelry.

absolutely no electronics such as laptops or phones
Wade a great place to start would be in the boot camp group. It has a lot of helpful information in here as well as videos of what to expect in boot camp. Read what you need to know about boot camp also. I have tryed to put all the info in one place in the boot camp group. It should answer most of your questions.
Hey Wade, our son went to boot on Nov. 13th. The only things he will need are glasses, atm card, cash ($50 or less) and make SURE he has a pre-paid phone card. He can not call home with out one. His photo ID and direct deposit info. EVERYTHING else will be sent home. So less is better. Bill
Be sure he knows how to use the card!! May seem silly, but sitting at a phone on Sunday without a clue as how to use the card can make for a frustrating day!
My Son said he wished he had pack a box before he left for RTC of things he would need once he was passed Basic. That way we could have sent it to him once he got settled in A School and this would have saved a-lot of back and forth. Also make sure he has a small adress book most people don't know phone numbers since our cell phones store them now, and any adresses he might want to write to.
