Our son ships for Great Lakes Monday 8/27, My question is should we obtain a power of attorney before he leaves in case we need to assist him with banking or insurance details and do you guys know if a seperate P.O.A is needed if god forbid we need to make a medical decision for him. thanks

I would highly recommend it. We did for our daughter Chelsea before she shipped to boot camp in June.  Sure enough, there was a disputed item which appeared on a credit card bill and she had only 30 days to respond. Without the POA, we would have been unable to handle it for her.  Each state has slightly different wording for POAs. Do a Google search for a general POA for your state.  They usually come in PDA format. Download it, and fill it out. Then take it to a notary public to make it legal. Most POAs have check off boxes that list items like financial issues, medical, so you may need only one. Also, you can set a limit on it to cover only the period while your son is in boot camp. After that, there is a special Navy POA he can obtain from the JAG office where he is stationed.

That's kind of what I thought Randy thank you very much. Time kind of snuck up on us so we will add one more thing to the " too do " list this week.
We applied for POA online using Legal Zoom. It took only about 5 minutes and cost $35. They prepare the document, mail it to us for signing and we send it back for recording. It was easy and quick.
