No More "Sailor in a Box" - From RTC- Posted 5 Sept 2019

Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

We talk about Holiday Routine at Boot Camp - here's the skinny

Sunday/Holiday Routine allows recruits to attend religious services and observe Federal holidays. From 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. recruits are able to: attend religious services, read and study, hygiene, perform uniform upkeep, write and read letters, or clean their rack and personal locker.

Important RTC/PIR Changes

RTC is making important changes to polices regarding PIR Guest Access as well as Bag Checks and Restriction Policies. Take the time to read thru these and be prepared when you head to Great Lakes for PIR.

I'm here, watching TV, and looking at pictures on this site.

I sent this email to a news paper, and thought that it might be good for parents to see it. If I'm wrong, someone tell me, but I think this is correct:

Dear Sir:

My son is in the U.S. Navy Recruit Training Center. In Boot Camp.
Because of this, I have a Google alert set to bring up news about the RTC.. and primarily receive community news items about men and women graduating from the RTC, or leaving for the RTC.

There is a point that all of the papers miss. When these men and women graduate, they are no longer RECRUITS. They are U.S. Sailors. Just as the Army graduates are referred to by rank and unit, the Sailors should be referred to appropriately.

I know that this type of news is submitted by parents or relatives, and not fact checked much, but can't you put in this fix?

Yours truly,
Stephen S. Brettell,
Proud Navy Dad

Oh yea, one more thing we did, one of the Russian Trawlers was next to us and about 100 sailors mooned them while they were taking pictures. Of course the Captain told the ship we could not do this anymore..............LOL

Mark, Yep was up there, we lost a S3 Viking right off the front of the flight deck, then of course in prime USN fashion we ran it over with the ship! Funny thing about the N Atlantic, we actually crossed the Circle at about 0100, they got all they knew together by Division and told us it was classified and no one could give out the actual location where we crossed. Of course that lasted about 6 hours. The cheap USN just did not want to spend the money for the ribbons and hold the Blue Nose Ceremony! Remember it well, and just showed my son the pictures of the waves coming over the flight deck with some of the ships around us, but one of them is yours! We had the chow hall open but a lot of shipmates were sick, no lines to me meant eating a LOT through the storms! Small World!

Scott, I was on USS Harry E. Yarnell C-17 and we operated with the Forres(fire)stal often. Were you on the Med trip when we left Lisbon and rode through 12 days of North Atlantic storms to mess with the Russians up around Iceland? That would have been '78. I think the Forrestal lost an aircraft over the side then, too. We ate bologna sandwiches for the whole 12 days 'cause it was too rough to cook.

Scott, I arrived at Great Lakes on August 24, 1976. I was there an extra two weeks, waiting for the Triple Threat company to fill up. My son blew the lid off the ASVAB and they tried to get him to go nuke. He didn't want to be stuck away somewhere and chose Advanced Electronic/Sonar Tech. Got a new recruiter-in-charge and he saw the scores and asked of anyone talked to him about CTI. So, they took him back to MEPS and he did really well on the DLAB so they reclassified him. As an OS, I worked closely with EWs and CTs. I was an Air Intercept Controller, controlled F14s in dog fights.

Mark, when did you graduate RTC and was it in Great Lakes? I was in Company 404 and arrived on Dec. 27th 1975. I also "peeked" at your profile and wish I could of convinced my son to grab one of the CT ratings, he picked MA. Although I got out as a MA I was a RM aboard the USS Forrestal 76-79 and worked as a CTR as a Radioman. Always treated well with the CT's.

Bill, as I have said before on here, I remember my PIR very vividly. Back in 1976 I was in Company (that's what they were then) 936. I played trumpet in the drum and bugle corps.

I am so looking forward to seeing my son, who is a junior, following my footsteps. His grandfather and great-uncle were in the Navy in WWII. He really feels he is carrying on family traditions.

My bet is if he plays an instrument, he is band. My son is the tuba player in division 911.

Mark, we just got our first letter today and our sone stated the same thing, he though that sometimes he was just back in the Sea Cadets. He got picked for one of the 900 Divisions and of course did not tell us which one of the three he was in, Flags, Band, or Color Guard. Unfortunately we cannot even guess at this time as he was also in the Marching Band all through high school!

Mitch, they lose the "recruit" tag when they pass battleships. They are officially Sailors when they put on the new ball cap that says NAVY. That is what makes the capping ceremony so special. They even play the song " I'm Proud To Be An American" My son said a lot of the Sailors got very emotional. And feel free to rant. I did many times during his A School days and now he is on a Destroyer and I have nothing left to rant about! Enjoy your PIR. When those doors open there is nothing else like it. My son had his PIR 1 year ago today. I wish I could see another one. Oh, and keep your eyes open for the division flag. Good chance the Sailors will have their faces covered because of the cold. Tough to spot them individually. Godspeed to our Sailors. HOOYAA!!
