No More "Sailor in a Box" - From RTC- Posted 5 Sept 2019

Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

We talk about Holiday Routine at Boot Camp - here's the skinny

Sunday/Holiday Routine allows recruits to attend religious services and observe Federal holidays. From 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. recruits are able to: attend religious services, read and study, hygiene, perform uniform upkeep, write and read letters, or clean their rack and personal locker.

Important RTC/PIR Changes

RTC is making important changes to polices regarding PIR Guest Access as well as Bag Checks and Restriction Policies. Take the time to read thru these and be prepared when you head to Great Lakes for PIR.

A reminder to ALL Navy parents... this amazing journey only starts at Great Lakes. With A-school, possibly C-school, and the fleet that your sailor will sson be joining, you will have a million new questions and concerns and worries. Be sure to stay active in NavyDads.com....with two sailors in the fleet I have as many questions today as I did when Kat had her PIR in '05. So stay active in the site--- and help others that are just starting their Navy journey with their son or daughter.

I am at the end of my journey here on the boot camp page. My son graduates this Friday. I'm off to Great Lakes Thursday night and can't wait to see him. I than you all for the support and suggestions. As a single parent, I was facing a heavy loss when he left. The pain was awful and the not knowing what he was doing was worse. The few phone calls were miracles and the letters are what made the weeks fly by. Write every day. Attach pictures of anything to a letter. They mean so much to the new sailors. Most of all support each other as you go through this process as you did for me. Thank you again. I'm moving on to the GM group.

Hello All
Just some quick notes:
Mike, when we got our box our feeling were the same, our son had made the next step in his life and we knew he was on his way, the best advice I can offer is to WRITE, WRITE, WRITE, the letters from home are what keep them going especially in the early week when they miss home the most, the weeks will fly by for some but will drag on for you and your family, we found that writing letters helped us release some of the saddness we were feeling.
Tim and Scott: enjoy your trip and your sailors PIR, I sat there with pride watching him got thru the routine and when he was done we rushed down and i gave him the biggest hug I could all the while crying like a baby, we spent as much time with him as we could but it all went by too fast and the saying goodbye part was tougher than I thought it would be, I can't think or talk about my son without tearing up, enjoy the time with your sailors, tell them how much you love them and let them go on to the next step of the careers.
Scott: my son was APOC for most of boot camp but did not get advanced in rate for it, he came out of boot camp an E-2 but that was due to some college credits he had under his belt before enlistment, we spent the day in Chicago and had deep dish pizza at Girodalos but there are TONS of places the eat in the downtown area, all of them looked great.
It took us about a hour to drive back to base from the navy pier including traffic, we went to the NEX and then to the base with time to spare.
Again enjoy your trip, PIR and your time with your sailors.

Back from PIR on October 9. All of our family's anxiety over the past few weeks went away when we saw Mark marching in with his division. To those of you who are just starting this journey, I need to repeat what was told to me over and over when we were waiting for phone calls and letters - no news is good news. I posted tips from our journey in the group "PIR - Tips, Hints and Helps". GO NAVY!!!

Mike - We should be receiving the box this week I would guess. Not sure how his mother or myself are going to react to that. Looking forward to that first phone call and getting plans started for PIR. This first week is really dragging but I know the time will fly by. I really miss him.

Mike, When we received the "box", it was evidence! Evidence that he was in fact in the care of the United States Navy. A very proud but sad moment. Nick is the youngest and had the most issues growing up. But, he has proved beyond any doubt that he is in this thing for good and for all. We are going to his PIR the 30th of Oct. My inlaws live in Chicago, so our plans will be a little bit different than most.
Greg, thanks for the report. I spent 21 years in the Navy and have never been to the Great Lakes Base. Won't need a GPS in Chicago, I have an old fashioned FIL (father in law). Kinda cool you were able to see him at the airport.
Thanks everyone for contributing, great reading!

Hey Scott - Are you coming to the Ramada Thursday night? Free buffet and meet and greet for PIR parents 6 - 8 PM. Hope to see you there.
