No More "Sailor in a Box" - From RTC- Posted 5 Sept 2019

Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

We talk about Holiday Routine at Boot Camp - here's the skinny

Sunday/Holiday Routine allows recruits to attend religious services and observe Federal holidays. From 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. recruits are able to: attend religious services, read and study, hygiene, perform uniform upkeep, write and read letters, or clean their rack and personal locker.

Important RTC/PIR Changes

RTC is making important changes to polices regarding PIR Guest Access as well as Bag Checks and Restriction Policies. Take the time to read thru these and be prepared when you head to Great Lakes for PIR.

Greg.....Congrats on your son Apoc rank that is cool.

Mike ..Right on the box is back !! Did he write you a note at the bottom of the letter ?? The time will go fast. Prayers are in order big time !!! He and all will need them.

Jack....congrats also for John !!

Greg... Did your son he gain rank from being that position ? It sounds like you had a great time yet graduation can be crowded and hectic. My son's PIR is this Friday..Waiting to hear about how battle stations went last night ?? We are planning on taking him to Navy Pier Sat.night for dinner. Any estimate for the time it takes to drive back to base ? Was it cold in Chicago ?? Any must sees in your opinion ??

Mike, It seems like it was yesterday that we received Timothy's box. Kinda happy and sad moment. We had also moved all his stuff from where he was living back to our house. It was really hard going through and puttin up all of his things. But you know the time really flys by. Timothy has PIR this friday. The 8 weeks flys. Before you know it you will be at this point, making last minute plans for PIR weekend. It gets easier for you as the weeks go by. Make sure you use the days to keep your son supplied with letters from home. Timothy has told me many times how much he looks forward to those letters. Sometimes they don't get mail for days and they are really anticipating their arrival. Thanks to your son Mike for his commitment to being a part of the greatest force for good in the world. Go Navy!

Congratulations Greg and Jack! We received "the box" from Wes last night and we had heard it could be a very emotional moment for parents, but surprisingly, getting "the box" strengthened us more than anything so far. We now know Wes is there and has become a part of the Navy family. We opened "the box" and went thru his stuff item by item 2 or 3 times each. Having his stuff back in our home is the next best thing to having him here. Sunday was a rough day for me so I needed a pick me up on Monday. Not only did we receive "the box" but our Pastor called me and talked for quite a while about our experiences. He has had 2 sons go into the Army and both deployed to Iraq, twice. 1 son was wounded and is recovering, slowly. So you see, he knew what we were feeling and what we needed to hear. You all hang in there and keep your heads up. We'll make it, together.

Hello All
Got back late last night from our trip to GL< had a great time with our new sailor, his PIR was great but lots of people, had 14 divisions PIR on Friday and it was PACKED, we didnt get the seats we wanted but were able to see his division and since he was APOC he was in the front.
Some advice to families going to PIR: first of all LEAVE EARLY, we stayed at the Navy Lodge which is only a mile away and it took us over a hour and a half to get from there to the base and another half hour to 45 min to get checked in and find seats, once we were in they delayed the start so all the families could get seated.
After PIR we met up and took pics and made our way out, went out to eat and then went back to the lodge to hang out, he was tired and laid down and took a nice long nap, so we pretty much just hung out with him until we had to take him back, we dropped him off in the parking lot next to the chapel and he found some other guys in his div to walk back with.
On Sat we picked him up and went to eat at the Full Moon Cafe which is just off Buckley road and Hwy 41, great menu and great food, then drove into Chicago to the Navy Pier and parked there, cost $24.00 for the day which was ok since we spent the entire day walking around the city after we were done at the Navy Pier, my advice is to bring or rent a GPS so you wont get lost which would be easy if we didnt have one.
Went to Giordano's for deep dish pizza which was great, go to the Rush st location it's closer to the Navy Pier, we hiked it to the Jackson street location which was a HIKE !!
Then we made our way back to the base to let him walk back, he was being shipped out to Ohare at two AM and his flight wasnt until two PM so he called us from a pay phone at the airport and we got up and drove to Ohare at three AM and found him in the terminal and got to spend six or seven more hours with him at the USO until we had to leave to make out flights, it was very emotional saying good bye again, knowing we wont see him for four to six months, we brought him his cell phone from home so he call call us from Grouton Ct, its not the same has him being here but at least we can talk to him daily.
I want to Thank all of you for your support and advice these last eight or nine weeks, it has been tough on my wife and me but we made it thru and if any one has any questions just ask and i will respond, I will move onto a different group but I will check on this group for the next couple of weeks.
God Bless our sons and daughters and all of you, take care and have a fun and safe trip to your new sailor's PIR.

I have a son that is an officer in the Air Force. He is excited to see his younger brother graduate in Great Lakes this month. Does anyone know if it would be appropriate for him to come in uniform? Thanks

Got a call from Zach yesterday! He sounded GREAT!
He is enjoying Boot Camp now. Battle Stations is Monday, and he is pumped about the team he is in.

He had fun at Captains Cup, and he said they did OK. I guess they all got Subway after, and he was VERY happy about getting a Pomegranate tea.

He went into Basic at a strong 193, and yesterday he said he is down to 165! I guess thats from not having McDonald's and Pizza Hut all the time.

Anyway he sounded great, and I am starting to get pumped up for PIR!
