No More "Sailor in a Box" - From RTC- Posted 5 Sept 2019

Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

We talk about Holiday Routine at Boot Camp - here's the skinny

Sunday/Holiday Routine allows recruits to attend religious services and observe Federal holidays. From 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. recruits are able to: attend religious services, read and study, hygiene, perform uniform upkeep, write and read letters, or clean their rack and personal locker.

Important RTC/PIR Changes

RTC is making important changes to polices regarding PIR Guest Access as well as Bag Checks and Restriction Policies. Take the time to read thru these and be prepared when you head to Great Lakes for PIR.

Just got a call from my son. Their division won Captain's Cup this morning. HooYah!! They have also received every possible flag so far and are on track for Hall of Fame. One more written test and battle stations left to go. He is definately been transformed into a Navy Man!

My son is Ship 14 Div 386 with a PIR on 11/13 he is set to start AE A school on 11/16 I understand that he will get a break at Christmas time but I don't know how long the break is. Does anyone out there have any idea how long their break is? Want to try and get to the Steelers-Ravens game in Pitt on the 27th
Thanks
Rick

Our son arrived at GL on 9/16 and we did not get a call until 9/19. He actually called but we could not hear him. They gave him a chance to call later. He will call. I know it is hard, but he will call. Keep writing and mail letters as soon as you get his address. He won't get them for a few weeks, but he will be very glad to hear from you when he does.

Wes has been gone since Monday and at Great Lakes since Tuesday night and we still miss him greatly. Our emotions are getting better each day. Our recruiter suggested and I want to recommend for you to allow your new recruit to take their cell phones with them to basic so they won't get tangled up in that phone system mess that apparently occurs on a regular basis. This way they have a better chance at making "the call" to you. Wes called us on his and he was actually able to talk a little longer than we had heard to expect. Every word is worth a million bucks! Of course after he made the call, I assume the phone went in "the box" to be sent home. Also, I wrote my first letter to him Thursday and decided I would type it on the computer because he wouldn't be able to read my handwriting. I copied and pasted a "Far Side" cartoon to the upper portion of the letter body for him to laugh at. I hope this doesn't get him in trouble, but I thought it would be worth the effort, at least once. Fellow new Navy dads, hang in there and keep your head up. We've got reason to be emotional. They spell it: L-O-V-E .

No phone call last night. We had his cell phone all set for him to take and hie recruiter said it was a bad idea to send it with him. I'm sure that he ran into the overloaded phone thing but his mom is pretty upset that he couldn't/didn't call. Wrote my first letter to him when we got back from the swearing in and told him all the things that I couldn't seem to get out when we said goodbye. Looking forward to his first letter now.

I have seen graduation from both sides and one was relief (my own) and the other was button bursting pride (my sons). Just a tip - Get away from Great Lakes - It is easier for the kids to relax when they don't see a uniform every minute. It will take them a little bit to relax but under the new uniform is your kid just with a reserve that can shock you. - Enjoy the time with them because it will never feel like it's enough but it will always be special.

Guys - just a word to you Dad's who have sons or daughters just shipping out for GL. My son left on 4 Nov last year. He's our youngest and we were 4 days from moving out of the house he grew up in so when he left there he knew he was never coming back. I can't even describe to you how much of a wreck my wife was inside and outside. I, like you guys have described, held it in, but man I was torn up for a few days. To make it worse, he and his buddy from home never got to make their "safe arrival" call - the phones were jammed up the RDCs said they didn't have enough time. So...we didn't hear a word until we got the box. I have to say - that first day or two were the very hardest I've experienced as a parent. But - good news! It gets slowly and steadily easier as boot camp progresses. You get the box, then the form letter, then the first letter and eventually the phone rings and it's him. He's been in 11 months. He's now a Gunners mate on a small boat team out of Norfolk and he is EXTREMELY happy with his decision to join and with his duty. His unit leaves for the Persian Gulf in a couple of months. We talk to him often and see him every few weeks. PIR was the most proud moment of my 19 years of being his Dad. He was the AROC for his 900 division at boot camp so he was front and center at the ceremony and I was so proud I couldn't even talk. (note how I can now!). Anyway, hang in there guys and don't hesitate to reach out for someone to talk to. message me and we can exchange emails if that helps too. Glen

My son Todd left yesterday for MEPS in Phoenix. His recruiter picked him up at our house a drove him to Phoenix. Mom was a wreck, Dad was strong but an emotional wreck inside. He should have been officially sworn in and signed his contract by now. He should be boarding his flight for Great Lakes any moment. We are hoping and praying and expecting great things from him.

Hey guys, just found out that Timothy got a medal for marksman in weapons training last week. Guess who trained him to handle a gun! His mother was reading her letter from him. He sounds very strong and determined. Can't wait, can't wait, 7 more days. They have been getting flags in everything and could make hall of fame. HooYah!! Can't wait to get home and read my letter from him. Also heard we would get a phone call sometime between the 8th and the 12th. This must be after battle stations.
