No More "Sailor in a Box" - From RTC- Posted 5 Sept 2019

Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

We talk about Holiday Routine at Boot Camp - here's the skinny

Sunday/Holiday Routine allows recruits to attend religious services and observe Federal holidays. From 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. recruits are able to: attend religious services, read and study, hygiene, perform uniform upkeep, write and read letters, or clean their rack and personal locker.

Important RTC/PIR Changes

RTC is making important changes to polices regarding PIR Guest Access as well as Bag Checks and Restriction Policies. Take the time to read thru these and be prepared when you head to Great Lakes for PIR.

Mike & Larry - My son arrived at GL on 9/16 (PIR 11/13) and we did not get the "I'm here" call until 9/19. There was something wrong with the phone he used and he got to call again on Saturday (for 2 minutes). We have not heard from him since. I write him every day. The people here are great and have been through what you are going through. It is tough, but it gets better every week. Look at all the links and you will learn a ton. Hang in there.

Mike & Larry - Go to their recruiters in 2 or 3 days and get their addresses and start writing those encouraging letters. They really do feed off of those. My son tells me in every letter how encouraging they are for him. He told me that he gets more mail than anyone else. I write him every day except on weekends then usually one letter for the weekend. Get ready to cry again when you get his first letter. That first one is a biggie. My son has PIR next week. Seems like these 8 weeks have flown by now. He still has another year of school after BC.

My son graduated from bootcamp 6-17-09 and i learned that no news is good news .When we got are first call it was almost scripted breif and to the point the next one was longer but they were few and far between,Letters seem to be the best way to communicate it gives them something to look foward too and i believe sunday was the only day he can write .They are so busy they learn a lot in a short period of time.It made seeing him at PIR very special, wait you will see a big change in him.I hope this helps good luck .

Jeff B. is correct you will be amazed. My son PIR'd June 26 and graduates "A" school on Friday 10/9. Then home for 10 days. He told me there are 2 things he wants to do. Go to a hockey game and visit the Intrepid (Navy, what have you done? LOL!) I am hanging around this website just in case I can be helpful to anyone going through the tough 8 weeks. I owe it to those who helped me get through what seemed like the longest stretch of my life.

Scott & Jeff,

Thanks for the replies. I have been preparing myself for this since he went into DEP in April. I know he will be a great sailor and all that. Nice to talk to people in similar situations.

You will be amazed at the changes in him too...........he is in very good hands. My son PIR'd May 28th and has just graduated from A school in Charleston SC.....he is now waiting to begin Power School he seems to have has adjusted very well - so much so he has applied for the Academy.......I was amazed at the changes in attitude and how he carries himself......welcome to the Navy family. The folks on this website have been extremly helpful - we are all in the same situation........ (I was going to say "boat", but..............)

Mike and Larry.....Prayers for Wes & John....Hang tough....My son is in PIR next Friday. Believe me you are not alone with the flood of emotions. My biggest dissapointment was not hearing from him more. You just never know when they are allowed to call ( for sure not much ). My wife and I tried to take our cell phones everywhere. One time I was in the hot tub and turned the football game up on the radio so loud that I never heard the phone ring...Saw the message recorder went off...Son says where is everyone ?? Dad blew it !! Advice you probably have already heard...Start writing those letters...When they are allowed to read them my son said it was like Christmas. Do not try and sneak any items the C.O's might not want to see. AH.... Dad quit trying to send a piece of gum to me...I am getting tired of doing push ups !!!! Oh well...Could you imagine if I tried to send his favorite candy bar....He would probably still be running around the base....Ha ! I am proud of your boys who will soon be young men serving in the greatest Navy on this planet. Training will be tough....My son said words like...tough, hell and brutal etc.....But they will survive as is he. They will make us all proud. Stay strong in your faith and keep those letters and photo's coming. T-MINUS 9 DAYS UNTIL PIR for our son.....I can not wait !! Scott

Mike your story struck home with me too. We drop our son John off today for his trip to GL. He will also be in AECF after boot. The flood of emotions today is overwelming. He hugged me before he went to bed last night and it was everything I could do to not let him see the tears in my eyes. I know this is a great choice for him but the reality of him not being home is hitting me hard today.

Mike,

Wes is Good hands. He would not be any safer at home or school. My son is PIR ing this friday. It was hard the first 2weeks until we recv, the first real letter. You and your wife will go thru one more hard time soon when you get the "box". But just remember it is only one part of the rest of his life. This site will help you and your wife. Alot of these people are prior military are have been thru it and will answer all your questions. Well i must get off i am going to the airport then to GL. PIR FRIDAY GOD BLESS AND GO NAVY!!!!!!!

We just received a call from Wes at 12:02am this morning (just after midnight CST) and Wes is doing fine. He sounds very tired but still positive. We had the chance to ask him a few questions and when we asked if it was as he expected, he said "yeah, kinda sorta", probably one of the biggest understatements of the year. ha ha. My wife and I are encouraged and less emotional now, knowing Wes is safe and doing something he chose. We'll still miss him as much as we ever have, but he makes our family proud by making a committment to serve his country and also by taking an interest in preparing for his future as a fine mature young man. Thanks to all who have responded. I will try to stay in touch and let you all know how life in the U.S. Navy is for our son. Let me know if I can help you in any way.
