No More "Sailor in a Box" - From RTC- Posted 5 Sept 2019

Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

We talk about Holiday Routine at Boot Camp - here's the skinny

Sunday/Holiday Routine allows recruits to attend religious services and observe Federal holidays. From 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. recruits are able to: attend religious services, read and study, hygiene, perform uniform upkeep, write and read letters, or clean their rack and personal locker.

Important RTC/PIR Changes

RTC is making important changes to polices regarding PIR Guest Access as well as Bag Checks and Restriction Policies. Take the time to read thru these and be prepared when you head to Great Lakes for PIR.

Let me answer Eddie’s concerns with a little editorial here. Even though I may be known as Navydads Admin, I have two sailors in the family. My daughter has been in the Navy for almost 5 years and my son for a little more than 2 years. I had no issues or worries when either one left for Great Lakes save for wondering if they had the mental discipline to tell them themselves that they could do it and they could succeed..

I realized that neither of my kids was ready for the fleet……. Don’t ever forget what this business is about…this is a deadly serious work with consequences that can have ramifications that ripple throughout the world. Neither was prepared for that reality by living at home, going to school, working at a neighborhood job and living the easy life while they partied with their friends on weekends. I knew that once at Great Lakes they would get yelled at. I knew that they would go a period of attitude re-adjustment while their ties to home were “modified”. I knew they would have to clean the head and barracks. I knew they would get their share of shots and probably a tooth or two pulled. I knew they would learn to function as a team. I knew they would get really tired of pushups and running. I knew they would have ups….and I certainly knew they would have downs. I knew they would probably ask why they had enlisted……more than once. I knew they could do it if they wanted to. And I knew that PIR would give them a sense of pride beyond anything that they had yet accomplished in their lives.

I hope none of the parents out there think that joining the Navy is like signing up for summer camp because it’s a little more serious than that. Since October 1775 the Navy has stepped up and helped protect the interests of the United States during war and peace and in doing so many young American lives have been lost. It is a noble history and I’m proud that my children are part of that and continue to help in the never ending struggle for freedom. Do the videos show everything that goes on at Great Lakes? Probably not. But I know that RTC continues to generate sailors that go on to serve in the fleet and become part of the greatest naval force the world has ever seen. I wouldn’t worry about it because all is forgotten when you see the children you’ve raised walk through that big door in the Drill hall at great Lakes…….

Eddie...I believe most of what goes on in boot camp has been portrayed accurately in videos. There are a couple of exceptions that the Navy does not pretend about. Battlestations isin particular. The Navy shows very controlled snipets of this element of training because the Navy desires it to be kept secret. But...Battlestations is explained, so it cannot be considered a surprise. My kids each reported that they were not surprised by anything. I had prepped them about much of it...things that boot camps have always been about.

I will tell you what the films fail to capture...the pressures and stress on the recruits as they go through it. The RDCs being nothing but helpful in the folding of items, etc (lol)...of course they do not want to present that element of boot camp either. Not to families and loved ones who will fail to grasp the purpose of it in a promotional video.

Having just watched a two part video posted on here and on youtube with my son who just went through last year, I can say that it pretty much covered everything...including a description of what battlestations is. For the most part, it covered everything (though it did not go into detail about what training classes the recruits get...I am thinking this may be classified).

navy lodge is a great place to stay and it is probably the closest place as it is just across the street from the hospital. they can get you a shuttle or you can drive yourself . it is less than 1 mile away and they make a great cup of coffee which is complementary 24/7. spirits are available from a vending machine.
