No More "Sailor in a Box" - From RTC- Posted 5 Sept 2019

Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

We talk about Holiday Routine at Boot Camp - here's the skinny

Sunday/Holiday Routine allows recruits to attend religious services and observe Federal holidays. From 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. recruits are able to: attend religious services, read and study, hygiene, perform uniform upkeep, write and read letters, or clean their rack and personal locker.

Important RTC/PIR Changes

RTC is making important changes to polices regarding PIR Guest Access as well as Bag Checks and Restriction Policies. Take the time to read thru these and be prepared when you head to Great Lakes for PIR.

Who would have the time? Believe that would be a violation of federal law and US postal regulations.

My son is under the impression that both outgoing and incoming mail are opened and read. Is that true? Is their mail screened? Thanks,

As I recall...no cells on the RTC base....across the street is a different matter, but that two years ago and I can't really say what policy is now. Maybe check out the FAQ's in the About This Site area and see if there is a cell/electronic device question/answer

Andrew, I wanted to clarify that your son will be able to use his cell phone while on the base following graduation. But, have him heed this warning... he may talk on the cell phone in places like the NEX, USO, or even in a vehicle. But, if a sailor is seen outside walking and talking on the phone they will get yelled at by their superiors. I saw this happen to several sailors at PIR. The sailors are anxious to make phone calls to family/friends and overlook that simple rule. I don't know if sitting outside talking on the phone falls under this rule.

Thanks for the info, Paige. Fortunately, I have a good friend who lives 20 minutes from the base. I intend on leaving a care package there for him (CDs, MP3 player, etc) and will probably leave the other things, too. I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE HIM!

Andrew, your son will eventually be able to have all those things you mentioned. And, he can even use them during his liberty time off base following PIR. However, he will not be able to keep those items with him when he first reports to the A-School side of the base. Usually within the first few/several days, your sailor will contact you and give you his new address where you can have his things mailed or shipped to him.

The digital camera is a really nice choice for a gift! PIR will be here before you know it!!

I, too, just booked my tickets/hotel/car for PIR 09-25! Question: will my son be allowed to get his cellphone after graduation? He is going to be on hold for five days after boot camp. He will be attending A school across the street. Also, I was told that en excellent graduation gift is a digital camera (recruiter's advice); can he get this, also? How about a laptop?
