No More "Sailor in a Box" - From RTC- Posted 5 Sept 2019

Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

We talk about Holiday Routine at Boot Camp - here's the skinny

Sunday/Holiday Routine allows recruits to attend religious services and observe Federal holidays. From 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. recruits are able to: attend religious services, read and study, hygiene, perform uniform upkeep, write and read letters, or clean their rack and personal locker.

Important RTC/PIR Changes

RTC is making important changes to polices regarding PIR Guest Access as well as Bag Checks and Restriction Policies. Take the time to read thru these and be prepared when you head to Great Lakes for PIR.

Larry, I think that would be great. Name the day and location.

Larry, I wish to clear up a point. If immediately after graduation a sailor is transferred to the A-School base and they have family they will be given the whole week-end liberty, day and night. There is a three hundred mile restriction placed on week-end liberty. Some of the requirement the new sailor must full fill are they must call in each morning and each evening while on liberty. The new sailor must be in uniform, they cannot drive a car or drink alcohol. Sailors who transfer to the A-School base and do not have family and those sailors who will be staying on the Recruit Base will be required to return each and every night and may be required to pull duty (Basic Training base only).

All new sailors going to the A-School base will probably be assigned to the Enterprise for the first 2 weeks of post basic training. It is during this time they will be involved in I.N.D.O.C. training which is basic Indoctrination. They will also be starting to work for there Phase 2 (can wear civilian clothing and be allowed week-end liberty off base only with a liberty buddy)

In closing, if your sailor is transferred to the A-School base there is a wait of from 2 to three hours before you can pick them up. Sailors may be picked up at Gate 1 (Main Gate A-School base) Visitor Center. Family will be allowed to wait in the U.S.O. ( opens around 13:00 hours). Those wishing to go there will be escorted by NAVY personnel. Hope this helps. Have a great P.I.R. and enjoy your new sailors. Gary T.

9/11 PIR...Parents get together?

Not sure how many know this...but when our recruits get liberty call that weekend...Fri-Sun...they will have limitations on their time off. In most cases, right after graduation you will be able to take your recruit for that day on Fri. They will have to be back fairly early in the evening...I think it is by 8 or 9...but you need to drop them off almost a full hour early so they can work on getting checked in...evidently that takes a while and even if they are in line when curfew hits, they are in trouble. Sat and Sun they will have to muster in the morning and then check out. You will get them mid morning and have them until about 8 or 9 again.

The point is...the evenings after you take your recruit back are open. So...would any parents who are going to be in the Waukegan/Gurnee area for PIR to visit your recruit like to make plans to meet over coffee and pie or something? Would be fun to all get together. We can do it Thur night before PIR or Fri or Sat night after.

Edward,

LOL...I agree with the comment about a sailor and his priorities. :) But, having said that, my wife is right there with your wife...she said if our son had done that, he'd have some explaining to do.

I would not fret too much about it. If talking to his girlfriend is what he needed to calm his nerves and give him that boost he needs to keep going, so be it. When you see him next your wife needs to learn this simple phrase to punish him with, "Drop and give me 50".

LOL............the only call I got from my son while in BC was when he needed more names/info for his background check. Every other call he made went to his GF also.

Larry, thanks for putting into words what I have felt about the service these past 43 years. The pride I felt and still do came out when my son had his P.I.R. 13/03/09. The tears, emotion, memories and pride rose anew while reading you post. Thank you again. Gary T.

Larry, thank you. That is the most eloquent thing I have ever read about boot camp, or actually one of the most eloquent things I have ever read, period. Your love for the Navy really shines through! You must be just bursting with pride for your sailor getting ready to graduate. Honestly, I was hearing "Anchors Aweigh" in my head as I was reading it. I especially loved the phrases "the fleet was calling us" and "your children are on a great adventure."

You should really post that on Navyfor Moms. I think that would help a lot of the worried moms. I would have loved to have read this when my soon was in boot camp (he had PIR on 6/5/09).

Thanks to Larry and Admin for posting a letter which puts it all out there, I agree with everything in the letter, I recall my time in boot camp so many years ago and how I felt before, during and after, Larry's letter pretty much says it all.
To all you parents with sons and daughters in boot camp, just keep writing and giving them your support, it will be over before they know it and then its on to new adventures, but I think with all the web sites out there today the new sailors will be able to keep in touch with each other easier than ever, it was tougher back in mine and Larrys day.
Thanks to all of your sons and daughters for their committment to serving our great country, God Speed to them all.
