No More "Sailor in a Box" - From RTC- Posted 5 Sept 2019

Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

We talk about Holiday Routine at Boot Camp - here's the skinny

Sunday/Holiday Routine allows recruits to attend religious services and observe Federal holidays. From 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. recruits are able to: attend religious services, read and study, hygiene, perform uniform upkeep, write and read letters, or clean their rack and personal locker.

Important RTC/PIR Changes

RTC is making important changes to polices regarding PIR Guest Access as well as Bag Checks and Restriction Policies. Take the time to read thru these and be prepared when you head to Great Lakes for PIR.

Yes...and do not hold the mail...send it to the address your recruiter gave you. If you think it may be wrong, have your recruiter re-check...as they can contact people at RTC and get it right. But if the letter goes to RTC, it will find your recruit. Send them as soon as you write them!

Regarding addresses...when my son was there last year, the first address he sent home for us to use ended up being wrong. We stuck to the address we had gotten from the recruiter...which was also the address on the web site. He was able to get all of our letters.

Our daughter, who is in boot camp now, sent her first 2 letters home before she made company...so the address was not even close to what we had been given, but she told us specifically not to use them. Again, we sent all mail to the address her recruiters gave us, which again, matched the e-mail on the web site for RTC. She did not get them right away, but that because of her company commanders...not the addresses used.

I spoke to my son about this issue and he said they had been told a bunch of stuff about temporary addresses, vs their permanent ones. It was early in the boot camp process, and frankly, they are just not paying attention sometimes. My son fgave us an incorrect address and never even knew he did so. My daughter (who pays close attention to detail) stated very clearly that we were not to write her back at that first return address she used, as it was temporary until they were assigned their division and compartment. The recruiters know where our recruits are going to be assigned by talking to the RTC command itself...so their knowledge of the address is to be trusted far more than our shell-shocked week 1 recruits. :-)

My advice would be to send to the e-mail the recruiters give you, sicne they contact RTC and get the address directly from the command that is specific to your recruit. I would not worry too much about delays in them getting mail. It is a reward/punishment item in boot camp, and can and will be held over their heads for the to perform. (Alright...you guys screwed up so bad today...no mail call!).

And something else to know...those first 2 or 3 weeks mail is held purposely. Correct address or not. Remember, part fo what our recruits need is some seperation. So be patient. They will get your letters. If you are using the wrong address, it will eventually find your recruit (so long as it is addressed to the base), and if you are using the wrong address your recruit will let you know, I am sure.

Mail Problems!

I know it is normal for them to hold their mail for two or three weeks before the recruits even earn the right to receive them.

I've contacted RTC to find out the deal on their addresses and when I hear back from them, I'll pass the info along. Do not wait to send mail, no matter the address get those letters off to your recruit. Let RTC figure out how to get them to your recruit.

I strongly recommend saving those letters until you receive your first one. The address the Recruiter gave us was different from the address on RTC which was different from our son's letter. We had sent out several letters (numbered of course) to the address on RTC. He eventually received them but a couple of weeks after our correctly addressed ones.

Ron,

I'm EG (NavyDads Creator) and Paul is NavyDads Admin. I'm just now seeing the address talk. The link provided for addresses is an official Navy website for RTC, I would hope they have the correct addresses. I've heard many of times that the recruiter has the wrong address most of the time. So, who knows? Once you get that first piece of mail from your son you will have the correct address. I would think if you mail it to the address on the RTC site it will make it to him. As long as the ship and div number are on the letter and the letter makes it to RTC they will get it to him. I believe the addresses on the RTC site are written in stone and will always find their right place even though their might be other addresses to mail to.

Keep me posted on how this go's and I'll contact the RTC site in the meantime to see how reliable those addresses are for us parents. This is just the beginning, wait to you get to figure out how to send a package to a ship on the other side of the world. LOL
