No More "Sailor in a Box" - From RTC- Posted 5 Sept 2019

Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

We talk about Holiday Routine at Boot Camp - here's the skinny

Sunday/Holiday Routine allows recruits to attend religious services and observe Federal holidays. From 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. recruits are able to: attend religious services, read and study, hygiene, perform uniform upkeep, write and read letters, or clean their rack and personal locker.

Important RTC/PIR Changes

RTC is making important changes to polices regarding PIR Guest Access as well as Bag Checks and Restriction Policies. Take the time to read thru these and be prepared when you head to Great Lakes for PIR.

Jamie, I am so happy for you. I'm a day closer to seeing my son and I couldn't behappier myself! Do you know if we can order things from NEX? I hate long lines too! LOL

Jamie, I can see how proud you are of your son! It's amazing the transformation that seems to happen very quickly. The letters we have gotten are now displaying a lot of maturity that my son lacked before her left. I look forward to seeing a man at PIR rather than the kid that went to boot camp a month ago.

Hi- Iam back from GL. My son PIR 12-24. We froze..it was neg 24 on Sunday, but thankfully it warmed up to a even 10 degree the day of PIR. We took the shuttle to PIR. I would suggest that anytime. The shuttle bypasses everyone waiting in line to park their cars. The walk to the drill hall was not bad at all. However, I could see how it would be hard on little kids or elderly. Get there early if you want a good seat and division t-shirts. My son was a grad n go, but thankfully he was allowed to take 10 day leave, so he said lets get the hell out of here meet ya at the nex. He hiked it back to the ship and then met us at the NEX. Total walk for him was 4 miles. Oh yeah be prepared to stand in one hell of a line if you intend to buy anything at the NEX. I wish I had the gumption to stand in the line. I really wanted some of the Proud Navy Mom window decals. We then went to Rainforest Cafe and my son was in shock. He said it felt weird being around so many people and it annoyed him that people did not walk on the right side of the hallway. LOL. He left today to go to his dad and then he heads to A school on Jan 3rd. I cried like a baby when he left. He looked so good. He was so handsome in his uniform. My boy is now a man. It is an awesome feeling...such a pridefull moment.

my son just pir'd on the 19th dec. and thought I'd pass on a few thoughts. First, its a great experience and everyone should try to attend. We stayed at the Navy Lodge which was very convienent more so than any otherproperties as well as economical 62.00 USA/ night and comfortable.
It is right next to the veterans hospital close to buckley st (the street that the gate you need to enter to attend the PIR). I strongly urge you to rent a car as most of the places you want to go are not within walking distance and this area is really easy to get around in. Even with snow the area is mostly flat. The guards will not let you line up on Buckley in front of the gate until 6:15 but it was not a chore to check in for the PIR. Bundle up!!!
Did I mention Bundle Up!!!!! I'm still thawing out. From the parking area it is probably to much of a walk for grandparents unless they are in good shape. Its a great time but don't get upset if you don't get to spend a lot of time with your seaman recruit, but things can change between PIR and grad and go. Our son was supposed to be grad and go but at a briefing after the PIR his departure time was moved back a day which mean't we had a little extra time to spend with him and I am thankful we had car as we went to a decent (lone star in gurney) restaurant. Man, you want to see somebody eat, while the food is good at Great Lakes, he really seemed to appreciate a good steak and apple cobbler. One more thing my son said it
costs about 7 dollars to ride the metra from or to Chicago, but have a cell to call a cab as there isn't much at the station. A good time was had by all and thats it except its nice to get back to some warm weather.
