No More "Sailor in a Box" - From RTC- Posted 5 Sept 2019

Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

We talk about Holiday Routine at Boot Camp - here's the skinny

Sunday/Holiday Routine allows recruits to attend religious services and observe Federal holidays. From 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. recruits are able to: attend religious services, read and study, hygiene, perform uniform upkeep, write and read letters, or clean their rack and personal locker.

Important RTC/PIR Changes

RTC is making important changes to polices regarding PIR Guest Access as well as Bag Checks and Restriction Policies. Take the time to read thru these and be prepared when you head to Great Lakes for PIR.

Craig, I am very impressed with what you accomplished in the Navy. I know that you are very proud of your son but I bet he is equally as proud of you. My son has said he plans on making the Navy his career. I am very proud of his decision and feel it is a good match for him. He went through JROTC in high school and really liked it. He says the military life is for him. I sure hope so!

The ship is actually a combat seaplane tender. Their primary mission was to service & fuel seaplanes (PBYs) that were providing emergency rescue (sometimes called Dumbo missions) for downed pilots in the ocean. They sometimes served as escorts to supply ships and other duties that a destroyer had. Most people I talk to have never heard of this type of ship.

When your son gets through with everything and gets signed up, please give an update.

Wade- much depends, as I remember, on ASVAB scores and what rate your sailor qualifies for. With the economic downturn enlistments are up...so best to talk to a recruiter as soon as possible.

Wow. I didn't know there was a long wait to go to bc. My son was planning on going in feb. And we were going to wait until after Christmas to talk to a recruiter. But I guess we need to get on the ball to get him in line.

Robert S. - Thanks, he was supposed to go to the hotel on Tuesday and MEPS on Wednesday then the airport as you said. Its close enough for me to go to so I am going to watch him get sworn in. I know it doesn't make any sense. As far as a bag he was only going to take a backpack with a few toiletries which they will probably send back anyway. I am going to call the recruiter myself and see what he says. These are supposed to be my days with him before he leaves. We are celebrating Christmas this weekend for him. Its nonsense to stay in a hotel, we live 18 miles from MEPS!

Thanks Robert. That ship looks to be along the lines of what my Dad served on...and old "heavy cruiser".
Yes, I did 26 years...half enlisted where I made Chief Petty Officer and then got a commission as an LDO and picked up LCDR before retiring this past May.
The Navy certainly did more for me that I did for it and I could not be more proud of my son for taking this step in his life. He is also excited...with is good.

Hey Craig, we just went through the same thing. My son joined DEP in April. He just left Dec. 2nd. He too scored high on the ASVAB and qualified for most everything. The job he chose is what had him waiting so long. I assume your son will be in DEP. Make sure he goes to the meetings. They had a meeting once a week and the 1st Saturday of every month. The Recruiters did a good job preparing him for Boot Camp. Things he had to remember, things to expect, PT, etc.

I see that you served in the Navy. Thank you for your service. My father served in the Navy during WWII and is still in good health. The photo I use is of his ship. He will be going with us to PIR.

Natalie, my son just went in last week. There was no meeting at the hotel. This must be something special. You might want to call the Recruiter yourself and find out what is going on. We took our son to the recruiting station on Monday morning. A military bus picked him up early afternoon and took him to the hotel. He hooked up with other recruits and just hung out and had a buffet dinner that night. The next morning he was picked up at 4:30 a.m. and went to MEPS. That afternoon he was on a plane to Great Lakes. I have been reading everything online I can for the past month or so and have never heard of spending three nights at the hotel before going in or a meeting.

Also that is a lot of clothes to send back from Great Lakes. The box they are sent back in is 11 ¼” x 14 ¼” x 12 ½” tall. My son had his belongs in a sport bag that was too big for one box. It had a hard bottom that would not fold up good. He had to put two boxes together. I am sure he got in trouble for that. A nylon sport duffel that can fold up easily would have been better. If he does have to stay three nights, maybe the Recruiter can bring some of his belongs back to you.

Sorry I could not be of more help. Let us know what you find out.

Hello everyone...what a great site. I'm a retired Sailor myself and am in the process of getting my son Justin to join. I just got a call from him and his recuiter and they are processing all of his emergency data information now. He took his ASVAB test last night and scored very well and is eligible for just about any rate the Navy offers. He will be leaving Sunday for his physical on Monday. After that, it's a 6-9 month wait before he can get into BC. I was surprised by that, but they say with the economy the way it is, lots of folks joining now.

Ok, I need help now. I haven't heard of this one yet on here. My son is supposed to be picked up to go to the hotel on Tuesday and fly out on Wednesday. well, tonight my son got a call from his recruiter that he will be picked up on Sunday evening so he/they can all be at the hotel on Monday morning to have a meeting. That's it! No more info! I heard my son talk to him and tell him that didn't make sense. He said he was told he is still supposed to ship out on Wednesday but they may make him/them stay the three nights in the hotel anyway??? I don't get it??? Help!!!
