No More "Sailor in a Box" - From RTC- Posted 5 Sept 2019
Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

We talk about Holiday Routine at Boot Camp - here's the skinny
Sunday/Holiday Routine allows recruits to attend religious services and observe Federal holidays. From 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. recruits are able to: attend religious services, read and study, hygiene, perform uniform upkeep, write and read letters, or clean their rack and personal locker.
RTC is making important changes to polices regarding PIR Guest Access as well as Bag Checks and Restriction Policies. Take the time to read thru these and be prepared when you head to Great Lakes for PIR.

Gary, my son brought his cel phone, charger, iPod and a bunch of unread bon voyage letters from family and friends. I gather he had the chance to read those while he stayed in a hotel overnight and left for RTC the following morning. Like Scott, I got the "I'm here" at RTC call from his cel phone. This cel phone use privilege is all up to the RDCs of course. Obviously like Paul stated, all of those things were shipped back in the civvies box...
Same experience as Scott...I got a call as soon as he hit the jetway at ohare and then the I'm here call.My sons phone came home with it taken apart and battery removed.
Take in account something else. The more they carry to GL, the more that will be shipped home. Point is, the box usually comes home via FEDex and the cost is deducted from your SR's pay. Encourage your SR to travel light.
My son took his cell phone and his charger (it was a two day trip). It was nice being updated every step of the way. I was also surprised that they let him use his cell to make "the call." Both the phone and charger came home in the box.
if he takes his cell it will be sent home in the box....the advantage is that he can call from the airport but makes no difference once at RTC
Just out of curiosity. how many people have sent their SR's to boot camp with their cell phones and has there been any problems getting them sent home with their clothes/package? My son leaves next month and he was considering taking his phone and sending it home in his box.
Thank you Rick and Paul. Your comments are very helpful.
ask and ye shall receive: Public Affairs Office 847-688-2405
and Rick is correct....due to the holiday PIR will occur on Wed the 21st rather than on the typical Friday.
understood....just reminded all about the address issue. Your letters will get there regardless of ship and div number....may take an extra day or two, but they will get to your sailors.
No, you will only get one form letter as that has the password for downloading parking passes if needed. Moving sailors around from ship to ship is not that unusual....as issues may arise with facilities, RTC adapts.
Scott...a second form letter probably won't be mailed out, and I say that for this reason...recently form letters were mailed out stating a PIR date of 23 Nov which is as you know is the day after Thanksgiving. The correct PIR date was 21 November, therefore a statement was issued by RTC from the CO and was also picked up by Navydads and posted here. Another avenue to pursue in getting the correct ship number is to contact the RTC PAO office directly. I'm sure their number is listed on this site
Paul, no argument from me on what you say. Just to clarify my situation, I did wait for the form letter: the Ship 02 Div 802 information I received was from the form letter. I was happy as a clown until I learned on the Navy Moms site that all 800 divisions are in Ship 04: not Ship 02. I was not alone, in that other parents had also received the same Ship 02 Div 802 letter. That set off a mini panic that our letters to our sons (already mailed) would not get to them. That's when I, and other parents, began calling the respective recruiters for clarification. I do have a question for you: if my son is in fact in Ship 04 Div 802 (not Ship 02 Div 802), should I expect a second form letter with the corrected information?
