No More "Sailor in a Box" - From RTC- Posted 5 Sept 2019
Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

We talk about Holiday Routine at Boot Camp - here's the skinny
Sunday/Holiday Routine allows recruits to attend religious services and observe Federal holidays. From 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. recruits are able to: attend religious services, read and study, hygiene, perform uniform upkeep, write and read letters, or clean their rack and personal locker.
RTC is making important changes to polices regarding PIR Guest Access as well as Bag Checks and Restriction Policies. Take the time to read thru these and be prepared when you head to Great Lakes for PIR.

Week 6 about to end. I guess no news is good news. I'll be downloading my gate pass in a few days. Another hallmark in this boot camp adventure. Hard to contain the excitement.
We got our call today, at least my wife did, I was at work yet. That's OK as she really needed to hear his voice. Call was under 5 minutes, so happened very quick. He's doing well, had wisdom teeth pulled last week, but otherwise hanging in there. Looking forward to PIR October 12th.
No set time. I've heard some at the wee 0-something hours of the morning, and others delayed because they had pizza and grabbed a couple hours of well-needed rest before calling home.
Troy I don't believe per say that there is a set time for the "I'm a Sailor call". I got mine around 1600 PST. Your sailor may have to stand watch which could delay his phone call out. Keep your phone close to your heart as I did the last few weeks of BC. Heck I even slept with it...
When you get the "I am a sailor" after Battle Stations... about what time is that? the next day or ???? Just want to know when to be available.
I have two new sailors, my son who just completed Boot Camp September 7th and my daughter completed her's on July 27th. They were both given their two phone calls that Paul mentions and it does depend on the RDC if the are given any other phone calls. My daughters division was given their 2nd call after week 3 or 4 as a reward for something that they accomplished, it was for 20 minutes and she made sure to call the four or five people that she thought was really important to her, (both parents, her grandmother, and her boyfriend). My son followed her into bootcamp by 5 weeks and I thought that he would get that call after week 3 or 4 and it never happened. We didn't get his 2nd call until after Battle Stations and were told that he was a Sailor.
Since my daughter has joined the fleet, she has been deployed and we have received only one phone call, she has 2 to 3 more months on her deployment and we have no idea on when we will get her next call, it will probably be a week before they return to their homeport that we will probably getting a phone call. At least we know they are doing well. What is it that I keep reading on this site, "no news is good news"
http://navylive.dodlive.mil/2012/09/10/uss-new-york-a-living-breath... Motto: "Strength forged through sacrifice. Never forget."
reminder: you are entitled to two calls- "I'm here" and "I'm a sailor!". Sometimes you'll get more, and sometimes not. Your sailors are in good hands - trust in the RDCs and trust that the 237 year history of the Navy has taught them how to make sailors out of civilians. When in the fleet calls may be far and few....better get used to it!
Phone calls home in bootcamp? Still baffles me. I'm used to USMC bootcamp where you say goodbye to your son/daughter for 13 weeks the only coorespondance is by the USPS.
If your SR calls and you just miss them, you can call them back on that number. Saves their minutes also. Each time they call takes 20 minutes off some phone cards.
