No More "Sailor in a Box" - From RTC- Posted 5 Sept 2019

Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

We talk about Holiday Routine at Boot Camp - here's the skinny

Sunday/Holiday Routine allows recruits to attend religious services and observe Federal holidays. From 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. recruits are able to: attend religious services, read and study, hygiene, perform uniform upkeep, write and read letters, or clean their rack and personal locker.

Important RTC/PIR Changes

RTC is making important changes to polices regarding PIR Guest Access as well as Bag Checks and Restriction Policies. Take the time to read thru these and be prepared when you head to Great Lakes for PIR.

Myron, I missed a call once too by seconds. I was about to have a breakdown when she called back. I think it depends on how much time they have and how many people are waiting. She called the one time I didn't take my phone to the bathroom with me. When she called back, she said she figured that is what happened since I had already told her I had my phone glued to me at all times. Ha!

Fingers crossed for more calls for you!

Jay, thanks for having Amber check in on her! Looking forward to our next letters. So far Taylor has sounded pretty good in both her phonecalls and letters, it is so encouraging.

Hope everyone gets a letter with good news in it this week.

Sean, that is incredible news! It's always good to hear about them doing well. A reward call home for a job well done, of course you are proud! great job by your SR.

Hi All. I hope I didn't give the impression I was downplaying my son's promotion to E2 the last time I posted. I was just surprised it happened so soon. I thought he may have done something out of the ordinary. I am very proud of him! BTW, I just got off of the phone with him. Yep, he apparently shined his shoes good. So his RDC awarded him and two other SR's with a phone call home. It was great to hear from him. And it is very clear from his voice and the way he speaks, that he has changed tremedously. I am so looking forward to PIR on the 28th.

Myron welcome to the missed phone call club! I too missed my son's phone call when he was in BC. As far as I know there are no set schedules for SRs to make phone calls. It's all up to the RDCs when they can make a call. Keep your cel phone on hand at all times always and look out for that (847) area code phone call!

Myron they usually get 1 call each week for about 5 minutes. They can be on Saturday or Sunday. We missed our sons first call, my wife was heartbroken. But my son called my parents who then called us afterwards. We were over prepared to get his call this weekend and very excited when we did. Do you know what ship & division your son is?

Amber knows the part of thick skin "mine". She still came out sentimental and emotional. I think it is starting to sink in. She said Taylor is doing fine Barbara. Amber seems to be upbeat versus emotional during Fridays phone call. Everybody hang tough, our kids are making it.

Joseph..that is so good about your SR! Every little thing that helps your kid adjust to bootcamp is a plus. I'm a laid back mom and my daughter is laid back so I'm sure she is having some trouble with "attention to detail" but she will get it. The strength my daughter went in with was the fact that she was never coddled and grew up with a thick skin, it has helped her tremendously in getting yelled and cursed at and knows it is not personal but just them trying to help. Ha! I guess that can count as a strength right? LOL

Well said Gary! I am very proud of my daughter, bootcamp is probably the most difficult thing these kids have had to go through and they are handling it so well. Just making it to PIR is a huge accomplishment, one I hope every SR makes.

Be thankful and be very proud of your kids! Keep in mind as we sit in the comfort of our homes and go about our daily routines they continue to work hard to make the transition of mind, body and soul as a US Navy Sailor. It's no picnic and definitely not summer camp. If they get a promotion that's super awesome. Also keep in mind that some SRs don't make PIR...

I'm not sure if the Navy still does this but when an SR gets promoted in BC they run a publication in the SRs local newspaper. I didn't see the publication until my son was in A-School but oh well better late than never hehe...
