No More "Sailor in a Box" - From RTC- Posted 5 Sept 2019

Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

We talk about Holiday Routine at Boot Camp - here's the skinny

Sunday/Holiday Routine allows recruits to attend religious services and observe Federal holidays. From 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. recruits are able to: attend religious services, read and study, hygiene, perform uniform upkeep, write and read letters, or clean their rack and personal locker.

Important RTC/PIR Changes

RTC is making important changes to polices regarding PIR Guest Access as well as Bag Checks and Restriction Policies. Take the time to read thru these and be prepared when you head to Great Lakes for PIR.

under normal circumstances- I've got to remind everyone of call policy....you are supposed to get two...yes...exactly two calls....one on arrival at RTC ("I'm here..") and one at the conclusion of Battle Stations ("I'm a sailor...") ALL other calls are "gifts" from the RDC's and are generally earned

The RDC's are in control of what happens with all of these div. My son had his PIR on 8/3 and phone calls are far and few between for his div., where other div. had more frequent calls. The SR's are encouraged by the RDC's to write and in some cases they are given a specific time to write. Also no matter what your kids told you before they left, write, write, write them letters.

Michael we got first letter in week 3 and then a phone call in week 4. so hang in there it seems to vary.

My son starts bootcamp today and I was informed it would be 3 weeks before we could talk again. Anyone else here wait that long or is this common?

Comment by Crystal Stoddart on August 14, 2012 at 12:49am

Joseph it takes about 2 weeks and you should get a letter with all his information. They have so may things to go through before they make it through.

Is there anyone who can tell me when your notified of PIR for enlisted?

Well my Sailor was dropped off at the recruiters this morning and heading to boot camp, didn't really know how much he would be missed here at home. Kind of a bitter sweet day we are so proud to be Navy Parents and look forward to sharing my Sons experience will he serves his country.

My son flew out 7/3 and will PIR 8/31. There can be holds and also delays due to passing all required tests, illness etc. so no date is final until a week or so before, no gurantees.

Our daughter was only at boot camp for 7 weeks and 4 days. She got put in a division where most of the others had been there for 1-2 weeks before she showed up. She says she thinks it was tougher because she had to wait for others to tell her what they had learned already, while she was making mistakes the 1st couple of days. It was tough until she got up to speed, but the good news is the short overall time until PIR.

Just based on our recent experience, be careful on figuring it will be 8 or 9 weeks. I'm glad it worked out this way because I would have had a tough time getting days off 1 or 2 weeks later.

So does the "9 weeks" of basic include the one week of indoc?  I am trying to calculate when my SR is graduating, so that I can make travel arrangements!  He reports to MEPS on Mon, Aug. 27.
