No More "Sailor in a Box" - From RTC- Posted 5 Sept 2019

Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

We talk about Holiday Routine at Boot Camp - here's the skinny

Sunday/Holiday Routine allows recruits to attend religious services and observe Federal holidays. From 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. recruits are able to: attend religious services, read and study, hygiene, perform uniform upkeep, write and read letters, or clean their rack and personal locker.

Important RTC/PIR Changes

RTC is making important changes to polices regarding PIR Guest Access as well as Bag Checks and Restriction Policies. Take the time to read thru these and be prepared when you head to Great Lakes for PIR.

We went to the Flanagans meet and greet. It was ok but not a big attendance. It's a good place to get some food, and watch a game. But if I could do it again I would try to go to Sarges meet & greet.

Also, try to get to PIR as early as possible. We got there @ 7:30am and most of the good seats in the middle were already taken.

For those who haven't made reservations yet, we really liked the Navy Lodge. Don't have anything else to compare it with locally, but I'd give it an A- (the minus is only cuz the a/c in the room wasn't so great).

I'm pretty sure we got the "I'm a sailor" call on the wednesday night, 2 days before PIR.

two things- recruiters data for ship and division may not be current so take that info with a grain of salt, and BS21 occur over several days....two divisions at a time....no pattern to those calls....and a reminder, BS21 schedules fall under OPSEC guidelines....do not post schedules for BS21

Rob- No problem...I was where you are and I understand.  Letme know if there is anything else I can help with.

----------------

Sue Ann- I'm sorry to say I cannot remember the exact day, but I can tell you that there is no pattern... Even within my son's ship/div people got the call on different days and at different times of the day/night.

Bob, My son Kyle shipped out to RTC 7/3. You can get a jump on sending him letters by calling his recruiter and they can look up his ship and division. We have not received a "real" letter yet but other parents have. One parent said her sons letter was dated 7/15 and postmarked 7/20 so don't be surprised it takes a while for letters to come!

Appreciate it. I'm more excited about being able to send him mail to keep him motivated than receiving much from him. I'm accustomed to his being away as he wrestled nationally in high school. I'm just excited about this whole experience for him. Thanks so much for sharing your words of wisdom with me.

My last piece of "advice" Rob (and any other newly inducted Navy family's)  Keep in mind that every family's Boot Camp experience is  going to be different.  We found that some Ship/Div's got more letters, some got less...some even got calls....you just never know what your gonna get till you get it.
