No More "Sailor in a Box" - From RTC- Posted 5 Sept 2019
Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

We talk about Holiday Routine at Boot Camp - here's the skinny
Sunday/Holiday Routine allows recruits to attend religious services and observe Federal holidays. From 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. recruits are able to: attend religious services, read and study, hygiene, perform uniform upkeep, write and read letters, or clean their rack and personal locker.
RTC is making important changes to polices regarding PIR Guest Access as well as Bag Checks and Restriction Policies. Take the time to read thru these and be prepared when you head to Great Lakes for PIR.

We had a great time at PIR last Friday, so proud of the 500+ new sailors, and especially our girl. She had to go to the airport early on Saturday, her flight out was at @ 7pm. She wasn't sure how that would go, but my wife got the call at 6am, that she could leave the airport as long as she was back at 5pm, so they got to site see on Saturday in Chicago. I wasn't sure if that would happen, and I returned home late Friday night.
I was very impressed with Great Lakes, and all the different things the Navy has going on there.
We stayed at the Navy Lodge, I'll give it a A- and would stay there again.
If I remember correctly (it will be exactly a year this Saturday that my son shipped to RTC) The form letter came separate from the box and that's when you will have his Ship/Division/Address. Oh, and belonging to the "worry wart dad" club is perfectly normal !!! He is in GREAT hands !! Stay tuned here...start a discussion group when you know his Ship/Div and if you are on Facebook find the Recruit Training Command page and "Like" it. They used to have little mini contests for a chance at winning a photo of your Recruits Div. (its VERY competitive but A LOT of fun) Navy Dads and Facebook were lifesavers for us and we made new friends along the way.
Hey Rob- You are being a little over anxious and rightfully so. It was several weeks after the "kid-in-a-box" arrived before we started getting letters from our son. You might get one in a couple weeks...you might get several all at once...its kind of a crap-shoot. Best advice I can give is to start writing your son NOW and OFTEN. My son said that it was the best thing ever when he got mail even if he couldn't write back right away (and even though his mom sent her letters with pink envelopes...LOL) When writing...keep it light...he is going through a lot right now and will be on information overload. Nothing for any parent to be concerned with (and I say that now only AFTER having gone through it). Finally, rest assured that this is the toughest part...once you get to the 4 week mark the time will start to speed up and before you know it you will be planning your trip to RTC for Pass-In-Review and awaiting the ever coveted "I'm a Sailor" call. Best of luck and Thanks to your son for choosing to serve !!!
Bob...congratulations on Matt's enlistment and all the best to him as he starts his Navy career! My son Mike is 2 weeks away from PIR and once a couple weeks passes it seems like time really flew. Once you get his mailing address, rally the family and friends to write to him alot...my son said that really keeps them going!
Got the 3 am call. Dad i am here, don't worry i will do good. Call you in about 3 weeks. Gods speed son, you will be fine!
A Day of ups and downs. Went to Fort Hamilton, NY to see Matt and 5 furture shipmates take their oath. Went to Newark, Nj airport and waited with him for the flight. Time came and long tearful goodbyes. As we were driving home from airport got call that flight was cancelled due to weather. Unknown when they are flying out, they got taken back to the Hilton on Staten Island. WAiting to find out when new flight is. Aaaaarrrggghhh
