No More "Sailor in a Box" - From RTC- Posted 5 Sept 2019
Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

We talk about Holiday Routine at Boot Camp - here's the skinny
Sunday/Holiday Routine allows recruits to attend religious services and observe Federal holidays. From 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. recruits are able to: attend religious services, read and study, hygiene, perform uniform upkeep, write and read letters, or clean their rack and personal locker.
RTC is making important changes to polices regarding PIR Guest Access as well as Bag Checks and Restriction Policies. Take the time to read thru these and be prepared when you head to Great Lakes for PIR.

Mom got the box the other day... Daughter left for BC last wednesday and we got the call about 1900 hours... Unfortunately did not not have the address on the box, but called the recruiter, who was able to get the information and give it to me pronto... Will begin sending the cards and letters, knowing that we will send far more than we give back... She made it into one of the 900 divisions, but will not know whether she will be musician or part of the drill team - [she plays all four of the saxes plus the flute] until we get the first letter from her... next task is to find out when her PIR is going to be so that I can take time off to attend [one of those things that you just do not miss].

James: Our daughter, who was just home for Father's Day for the first time in two years, is now back on duty at her home port, but if you think seeing the empty room is tough, wait until you try to read the first letter you get from your Son. I went to the mailbox expectedly for a couple weeks, and when the first one arrived I was shaking too much at first to open it, and then couldn't read the thing because it was hiding in the tears. Last year, I didn't hear - not even a phone call - anything on Father's Day, but had been forewarned they were participating in a joint operation and would be in radio silence so not to expect a call. Yes, life continues on, but even as I write this for you to know that sometimes it isn't any easier, the pride of what she's doing overcomes everything.
Son is in the air now heading for GL to get going on his new adventure. I am doing fine, wife is struggling a bit. Whenever she walks past his bedroom she comes out of the hallway crying. We are both really proud and already cant wait to go to PIR. Many family members are talking about going so I hope everyone can get in.
Am patiently awaiting the information to write as daughter started boot camp on Wednesday [6/20/12] after spending weekend with friends and family at her 'ship out' party. Got the phone call, actually got informed about the phone call by wife, on that same evening and now just waiting for the box to arrive, after which the letters get to start being mailed.
Will be making plans for approximate date of her PIR so that nothing will keep me from seeing daughter being a 'Sailor' in the United States Navy.
To say that I am a proud parent is definitely and understatement and would like to say to all of those who have family member, friend of the family, spouses, and significant others that are in BC and the Navy thank you for your sacrifice and know that there are many like myself who appreciate our 'soldiers' and what they do every day to protect what some take for granted.
May they all be safe and return knowing that they are both loved and blessed.
PIR was amazing! The single, largest take-away, at least based upon our experience, was that attendees should prepare to dress warmly because the AC works superbly in the buidling. People in our section were huddled together trying to stay warm. I can take a lot of cold weather and usually only wear a light jacket even when it's in the teens and twenties outside but by the end of the ceremony on Friday, I was shivering uncontrollably. Glad my camera had motion stabilization!
Thanks for the links and info. Our flight gets in before 8am so we are good with taking the train, maybe stop downtown and see some sites. We are staying at the Navy Lodge, not sure how early they have checkin but we probably have plenty of time to kill that morening. But I think we will rent a car at GL so we can meet our girl at the airport that night.
I've driven up from Midway to RTC....not a fun drive and not the best parts of town: the train is better than two hours with a transfer in downtown I believe: check this link for more info-
http://www.google.com/maps?ie=UTF8&f=d&sll=41.812267,-87.83...
I'd rent a car...
Jonathan-be thankful it's the navy and not TSA....GL has ample HC parking but it's advised to get their early...also wheelchairs are available to transit the parking garage to the drill hall and back...
