No More "Sailor in a Box" - From RTC- Posted 5 Sept 2019

Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

We talk about Holiday Routine at Boot Camp - here's the skinny

Sunday/Holiday Routine allows recruits to attend religious services and observe Federal holidays. From 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. recruits are able to: attend religious services, read and study, hygiene, perform uniform upkeep, write and read letters, or clean their rack and personal locker.

Important RTC/PIR Changes

RTC is making important changes to polices regarding PIR Guest Access as well as Bag Checks and Restriction Policies. Take the time to read thru these and be prepared when you head to Great Lakes for PIR.

My son left June 4th for GL I am waiting patiently  for the first handwritten letter.

Good to know.  Thanks.

Johnathan, security screening? We just went to PIR last Friday. We did not experience any detectors, wands or the like. There is plenty of security, but no metal derecting or exraying. Enjoy!

Most likely.  They're going to set off all the bells, probably, and elicit some whistles, too.  Just depends on the airport you're going through and how thorough they are.  Allow plenty of time.

PIR question.

Does anybody know is the security screening like at airports? I have hip replacments and set those things off like the 4th of July.  Should I allow extra time for wanding etc?

Got a call from our son today. He is on Ship 7, Div 225. All is well and we are elated to hear his voice. He said it would probably be another week before he would be alllowed to call again. He also was able to call his girlfriend so everybody is happy!

Great news Pete! We heard from our son today too.  He seems to be adjusting alright.

An emotional few days around our house. On Fathers Day I got a card from our SR that he had left for me from before he went to GL (June 5th). Sunday was a really great day for me.

Today, the first hand written letter from our SR, says he is doing well but it is hard; they just started PT late last week. Said he received mail on Saturday June 16th for the first time. My wife has writing to him everyday since he left and I have written a few times. Our SR asked us to consolidate his mail into one big envelope because he doesn't have much room for storage.

We have also heard on Navy4moms that sending a pre-addressed envelope to your SR to send excess mail home is a good idea.

Excited and proud. Ship 13 Division 233. Hooyah.

Vincent - Sounds like our itinerary exactly. We had time for Uno Chicago Pizza, the Magnificent Mile, and the Navy Pier, and still made the the 5:35 PM train back to GL (your return time may vary) and plenty of time for him to get back. He was worried about being late.

I believe if you use you're NFCU ATM card on a PLUS System ATM network you will be charged $1 per transaction including overseas. Otherwise per Rick, Navy Federal ATMs and CO-OP ATMs are free...
