No More "Sailor in a Box" - From RTC- Posted 5 Sept 2019

Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

We talk about Holiday Routine at Boot Camp - here's the skinny

Sunday/Holiday Routine allows recruits to attend religious services and observe Federal holidays. From 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. recruits are able to: attend religious services, read and study, hygiene, perform uniform upkeep, write and read letters, or clean their rack and personal locker.

Important RTC/PIR Changes

RTC is making important changes to polices regarding PIR Guest Access as well as Bag Checks and Restriction Policies. Take the time to read thru these and be prepared when you head to Great Lakes for PIR.

Per the NFCU...using 45000 NFCU, COOP Network or Moneypass ATM's are free....Visit navyfederal.org to find a free ATM near you....this was in my sons paperwork...obviously other banks have the option of charging outside these networks...

I'm sorry I did not get in to this conversation earlier. When my wife and I attended our daughters PIR back in March 2,2012. We made earlier plans using Urban Spoon, and found for my daughter the best Chinese And the best Steak house in Chi-town. I rented a Ford 500 and it snowed. We did like BillG and hightailed it out of there. We rented at the Navy Lodge...best place for the money and the proximity to the event. My hats off to the administrators of this web site. Some parents played it safe and stayed north of GL. With proper planning, you can make it downtown Chicago and spend quality time with your son/daughter. She finished A school in Pensacola as an E-3AM and is now a Blackhawk (hence the logo for me)

Just got back from PIR...hardly a dry eye in the house. Kids/Sailors looked great. FYI...we entered thru the gate on Ohio Ave., next to the train station. That's where the taxi's and shuttles dropped off their people. We parked in the base garage and had very little trouble getting out because we made a beeline for the car as soon as the ceremony was over. If I had it to do over again I'd park at the train station and walk in, since we were catching the Metra train to Chicago. The train ride was very easy and goes right down town. He'll be back here tomorrow for a "A" school at Corry. Now the real adventure begins and the work starts in earnest. Thanks to all

Got our 1st hand written letter this week. Was so happy to read it. Half her Div failed the 1st physical test, she says some of them have never worked out before. They have to deal with the whole range, don't they? Our girl had been cross training 6 days a week for 5+ months to be ready for this.

I just got the I'm-a-sailor-call from my son and I'm giddy with pride at the moment! I could sense the relief and confidence in his voice more so than in any call before. The family was already stoked about seeing him next Friday and now we're even more excited. RTC, here we come!

Paul - Already done, different people have a different take on their experiences with traffic etc. Just getting all the input I can to make informed decision. Some like taxi's, some shuttle, some Milwaukee, some O'Hare, a mixed bag. We'll take everyone's advice and use what feels right...Thanks to all for their posts, either way, we can't wait to see him.
