No More "Sailor in a Box" - From RTC- Posted 5 Sept 2019

Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

We talk about Holiday Routine at Boot Camp - here's the skinny

Sunday/Holiday Routine allows recruits to attend religious services and observe Federal holidays. From 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. recruits are able to: attend religious services, read and study, hygiene, perform uniform upkeep, write and read letters, or clean their rack and personal locker.

Important RTC/PIR Changes

RTC is making important changes to polices regarding PIR Guest Access as well as Bag Checks and Restriction Policies. Take the time to read thru these and be prepared when you head to Great Lakes for PIR.

Michael....my daughter graduated last October. Her journey has taken her from Great Lakes to San Antonio to Mississippi and finally to Portsmouth,Va. where she is now a member of the MSRON 2 team. She is loving it and I couldn't be more proud of her! Your time is coming...

That is great that they got to swear in at the White Sox game! I went to the Red Sox game on Memorial Day this year and last year. Between inning they honor local veterans, who got to go on the field and got introduced to the crowd. Lots of ovations and cheers for them all. The next day (last week) our girl was sworn in at MEPS Boston. Fenway would have been amazing for the swearing in ceremony. Way to go, White Sox. This is one of the few times I'll say this.

Things went well at the swearing in at the White Sox game, except for the Sox.  Anyway even though our son had to report on Sunday 1200 and had 2 days that could have been packed into 20 minutes, we were able to not only go to the field to see the ceremony but they allowed them to stay until the 6th inning.  Since they were sitting in the same section as us we got to spend the whole time with him.  We were told that they may just get wisked away after the ceremony but not this time.  Got "the call"  while we were driving home and so now wait for "the box" etc. Seemed like just yesterday he joined DEP now it's GL and on to bigger and better things!

Congratulations to your daughter, Ken.  Our children will sometimes surprise us, won't they?  But, if we think about it, the "education" they're getting starts the first day of Boot Camp with generalized knowledge, what is expected, and they form teams, peer groups, etc., to tackle things.

In high school or college, teachers try to have "study groups" but in the Navy there is definite peer pressure exerted to succeed.  If you don't study, if you don't fold your clothes just right, you are not only letting yourself down but the rest of your unit.  Others won't allow slacking, and as they move through Boot Camp, they're trained to rely on and assist their team.

They don't dare let their peers down, and it is the same even when they're assigned a duty station or aboard ship.  It is constant learning, practicing, certifying on various things.  And that's what makes the "team" aboard ship function as smoothly as they do when a real event happens.

Just over a week to go until PIR for my oldest daughter Leanne. This is our second time going through this process, our youngest went through bootcamp last summer, and it has been easier this time as we know what to expect.

I wasn't sure how Leanne would do at bootcamp because she has at  times in her life taken the easy way out , but she also has a record of excelling when challenged. I told my wife before Leanne left that I could see it going two ways for her: 1. she would hate it, tell an RDC off, and quit or 2. she would accept the challenge and kick some major butt. Well, I am glad to report it has been option 2.

She was made the Starboard Watch Section Leader and she apparenlty has done well at that. A couple weeks ago she told us she had been selected to go before a board for an award. Last week she said she had been to the board and had won the "Military Excellence Award". I looked on the bootcamp.navy.mil website and I assume she won the NAVY CLUB OF THE UNITED STATES MILITARY EXCELLENCE AWARD. We also received a letter from RTC that says she did indeed get an award and that we would be invited to a cake reception after PIR and would get to sit in a reserved seating area.

Obviously we are proud beyond words. We have been through PIR once before, but this will be a whole new experience.

College, or higher education, really can wait.  They aren't missing out on an education by any means, in fact probably learning more skills and more self-worth than anywhere else.  Besides, if they've gotten into the right program, they're also earning funds for their future education.  There is absolutely no disappointment in our young people, only pride, and we should keep telling them so.

I cried at the swearing in last week and I wasn't alone. Not afraid to admit it. It took a week to get the box, and we got the chain letter on the same day, with her address etc. Today we send a bunch of cards and letters, will keep em flowing. Can't wait for the next call. Our girl actually went to college for 1.5 years, straight A's. But this is what she wants to do, and we support her 100%. I miss her, but I'm so proud that she is following her heart, and serving her country.
