No More "Sailor in a Box" - From RTC- Posted 5 Sept 2019
Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

We talk about Holiday Routine at Boot Camp - here's the skinny
Sunday/Holiday Routine allows recruits to attend religious services and observe Federal holidays. From 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. recruits are able to: attend religious services, read and study, hygiene, perform uniform upkeep, write and read letters, or clean their rack and personal locker.
RTC is making important changes to polices regarding PIR Guest Access as well as Bag Checks and Restriction Policies. Take the time to read thru these and be prepared when you head to Great Lakes for PIR.

Scott - About the band, you can always order a DVD of each PIR ceremony, they shoot pro video of each one. I think they are $25 and can be ordered online, or at the office after your ceremony is over. It takes a while to get them though. About your A school question. My son just graduated on 4/13 and stayed at GL for school. They move to the main section of the base where there is essentially a small town. After PIR, you will get to spend about an hour with your son. He can't yet get his phone but will be given the chance to call you from a pay phone. Make sure he has your cell number for that call. Our guys had to be back to the ship by 12:30pm for a bus ride across the base to their new digs. We were told 4-5 hours of processing, but our son called us by about 3:00PM. He said there was not much to processing and was given liberty quickly. He then had to be back on base by 10:00pm. He then had liberty on Saturday and Sunday from 7:00am to 9:00PM. Save your gate pass for PIR. You should be able to drive to his new barracks as long as you have that, and he has to be in the car with you. For liberty, its a weird process. He has to walk 20 minutes out to the main gate to meet you. He gets in your car, and you then drive through the main gate to go back to the barracks. You then walk in with him to sign him out. There is supposed to be two people, but we only had one person to sign him out. Then you drive back out of the base. When you return, you drive back to the barracks and sign him back in. And be sure to have that ID ready at all times. BTW, the lobby of the barracks is a lot like a college frat house, really laid back, and nobody really seems to know the answers to anything. I have created a Google map with icons to show you the key areas you need to know. Good luck! http://g.co/maps/3ge5x
Scott....don't see your question here but going by memory....yes...that is typical for those going to A-school at the Great Lakes base. No, he has to check out of RTC and cannot have electronics there
My son was suppose to perform in the band at the last one or two PIRs. Anyone know if there are pictures posted anywhere?
Ship 2 Division 930, anybody else?
We received the form letter yesterday. Logan was able to write a short note on the back, says he adjusting well , past all the meds and began training on Monday 4-16. He is in SHIP-03 DIV 174 PIR 06-08-12.
Todd...I agree...My son also graduated on 4/13 and he said the same thing....the letters kept him going and focused....Write every day...even if just a little note that says you are thinking of them and you are proud of them....don't be negative, just keep it positive and upbeat....I added some photos from home in a word document and printed it with the letter....He said that was awesome and he really appreciated it....Just a thought.....
My son also graduated on 4/13. For all new parents, I have two things for you... It DOES get easier, and WRITE letters, and LOTS of them! My son mad numerous comments about how all of the letters lifted his spirits at the lowest moments. He kept all of them in a sack. He gave us the sack for safe keeping at home. At the airport, the sack was in a checked bag which was over weight. We took out the sack of letters and saved 3.5 pounds! THAT is how many letters he had, from his parents, brothers, friends and neighbors!
I will continue to monitor this forum to pass on any wisdom I can to new parents starting the journey. THANKS to all of the admins and other folks who make this happen! It is HUGE!
Thank you George....Have a great week...Our New Sailors are enjoying Pensacola as we speak I imagine...lol
I would like to take this opportunity to publicly thank Mr. Ron Bowen, his wife and family for their outstanding commitment to “Calls for Recruits”. Mr. Bowen thank you very much, I know you have helped many a recruit and will continue to do so.
