No More "Sailor in a Box" - From RTC- Posted 5 Sept 2019

Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

We talk about Holiday Routine at Boot Camp - here's the skinny

Sunday/Holiday Routine allows recruits to attend religious services and observe Federal holidays. From 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. recruits are able to: attend religious services, read and study, hygiene, perform uniform upkeep, write and read letters, or clean their rack and personal locker.

Important RTC/PIR Changes

RTC is making important changes to polices regarding PIR Guest Access as well as Bag Checks and Restriction Policies. Take the time to read thru these and be prepared when you head to Great Lakes for PIR.

Thanks, NavyDads Admin. I will definitely check into time at the airport. I did not know they would issue a pass to get through security.

That’s good Lee, sounds like you have the entire PIR weekend with your son. Sorry you didn’t get a phone call. I know that was a big disappointment. The first words out of my son’s mouth during the phone call was there were 2 feet of snow on the ground and it was cold. He has never seen more than an inch or two of snow at any one time and that happens only every few years. I can not wait to hear his stories.

Natalie, sounds like you are going to get your mail quicker than we did. Good. We had to hold on to the two sentences on the form letter way too long.

Lee, I can imagine these guys and snow! My son (our whole family) is a Cali boy, never lived a day in the snow unless he went to snowboard for the day! I'm frozen just thinking about it! :)

How lucky can you get? We got our grad packet Monday, but no phone call all week. We were hoping for a call on Christmas Day, especially since Kevin's PIR is getting closer every day. We did get a letter on Friday and he said he hoped to call over the holidays, but his division hadn't been given any information about calling home. According to his grad packet, his division (075) ships out the Sunday after PIR and then he goes to Pensacola for "A" school. He said he was very glad because he officially hates show now!

Robert S- check one of JohnM's posts in the PIR-Tips, Hints, and Help group...you may be able to get a few extra minutes with your sailor at the airport...you can get a pass through security and spend some extra time at the gate...anything you can get is worth it!

Thanks Robert! I finally got the form letter and heard that other parents from my sons division are starting to get real mail already so hopefully I will soon too! Just the form letter with 2 lines at the bottom brightened my day! WahHoo!!! :)

I also got a call from my son on Christmas Eve. He sounded good and positive but a little different. I think it is the Navy making a man out of him. What a great week we had. Our 1st letter and grad pack on Monday, 1st phone call on Wednesday, Christmas, 2nd letter on Friday. Wow!!

Read you Graduation Pamphlet carefully. When I first read the pamphlet, I thought the Grad & Go information on it was for general knowledge to all. But after reading more closely, it is telling me that Division 080 is a grad & go division. Apparently, they put all the grad & go recruits in the same division. Instead of getting Fri., Sat. & Sun with him, we get 2 –2 ½ hours on Friday. That’s it. Bummer! Hopefully your pamphlet will not even mention grad. & go.

Natalie, I hope you are doing well and I know you are getting a lot of support from here and N4M. My son went in 12/2/08 and we did not get the first letter until 12/22/08. We were about to go crazy because some started getting letters 5 days sooner. It seems to be flowing now and he is getting our letters using the address on the form letter. He told me not to change anything just keep them coming.

Check through old posts...there was some discussion awhile ago about flying into Milwaukee rather than O'Hare or Midway. I've flown into O'hare once and Midway once...traffic is no fun from either and have heard that Milwaukee is cheaper. Those posts were about 2 months ago I believe so root through the old posts.

I stayed at the Marriot Courtyard for both my PIRs...very nice place with shuttle service on the morning of PIT for a reasonable price. Dining is within walking distance if needed.

I heard there is the Navy Lodge that is supposed to be good and inexpensive and very close. You could look into that in the mean time I guess.
