Knit for the Navy

A group for those that knit or crochet that want to blanket our Sailors with a touch of home. Our goal is to blanket the entire Navy.

Ok, here are the basics. We are asking for handmade blankets/afghans that are twin bed size or smaller. You can knit, crochet, quilt, or make the hand tied (no sew) fleece blankets. (We are open to any other methods as well.) Any pattern or color, that is up to your creativity. Just be sure they are tasteful and appropriate. When you are finished, you can send them to:

Knit for the Navy
PO Box 539
Madras, OR 97741

After I receive the blanket/afghan, they will be collected and distributed to the ship of the month. Look for pictures of the finished blankets/afghans posted here. Any questions or suggestions can be sent to me or posted on our message board here. Thank you all for your help.

Ok...at the in Dec. we sent over 50 blankets/afghans to the USS Eisenhower. This month we have picked a new ship to work on. (Drum roll) the new ship is...the USS John Paul Jones, DDG- 53. The John Paul Jones is an Arleigh Burke class destroy and is based out of San Diego. The picture I have included is a picture of them in Pearl Harbor. Congrats to the John Paul Jones. We will be sending blankets to them on March.

HI Anita. Sorry I haven't written but I am mostly on Navy for Moms. I kinda forget to pop in here. We are working on blanketing the USS Eisenhower. It is an aircraft carrier so it is a huge job. So far we have approximately 50 afghans that are going out to the ship next week. I will make sure I come back here to post the next ship we are working on. Take care. Hope all is well with you and your family.

Hi, I haven't been on lately. Trying to get ready for a craft fair in 2 weeks. I have so much to do and so little time to do it in. But I will get some blankets out to you as soon as I can.

Hi girls, i am working on a crocheted one at the moment. It's made out of the same kind of crochet cotton you make wash clothes out of. In fact, I am making strips, the width of a wash cloth, and then I am going to put them together. I came up with the idea a few yrs ago when the wash clothes weren't selling at the craft fairs. It really works up nice.

I want to share my latest afghan with everyone. It is a more difficult pattern than I have tried before. It is called "patchwork sampler afghan" available on Lionbrand.com in their free pattern section. It is a strip afghan. There are 5 strips that are patterned and 2 side strips. The ends are finished in a lace pattern. Here are a couple of pictures of what I have so far. It is a lot of fun and seems to be working up fairly quickly.
