A little input would be appreciated. My son is on a sub, we had thought he would be out for 3 weeks. He's only been on a few months and this is his longest cruise so far. I have e-mailed him pretty much daily-I convert the sports page from the local paper to text and e-mail it to him. He has e-mailed back to say all is ok. 3 weeks has come and gone. My question is, "What if anything can he e-mail about when he will return?" I'm assuming not much, but his mom and I would like to get some idea. Thanks.

OPSEC rules dictate that he, (and no one else for that matter), can talk about ship movement, times and dates in and out of port. You might want to take at look at the OPSEC rules again and you will know what he can and can not say. I wish I had more to tell you about when you might get to see him, but the Navy is very strict on this matter. We have heard stories of internet access being shut down to all personnel on board because someone e-mailed a specific time and date of a port of call.
Permalink Reply by Bubblehead on October 23, 2011 at 9:25pm I was a nuke on a fast attack 34 years ago. We had no outgoing messages at all. I'm surprised to hear that there is anything outgoing now. (Remember, it's the silent service.) We did get incoming family grams, and they inspected all messages for anything that looked coded.
My advice is to not play games with coded messages. There's a reason for secrecy. My own existence was threatened by security leaks back then. (Look up John Anthony Walker in wikipedia.)
Your son has a secret clearance. Treat it seriously.
My son is now in nuke school. I'll give him the same advice.

Sailors do get incoming emails and can send outgoing emails. This is limited and all incoming and outgoing emails are screened. If you send something that should not be going they will bump your email back and let you know why this was done and it is the same for the sailor. One thing for those with new sailors assigned to subs, they are extremely busy with quals and will have very limited time to communicate. They do really appreciate whatever you can send to them but do not expect regular replies as that probably will not happen. As for operational specifics, they are under very tight restrictions as well they should be about what they are allowed to say, especially by email. When subs are out on deployment there are ombudsmen newsletters that go out to family to keep everyone informed.
