Navy Dads

We are probably heading down to see our Son, Brandon, the last week of Sep. That will be 4 weeks after boot camp, so we hope to drop off his car with him.  He started a life skills class yesterday and will start a math class next Mon.

We were wondering if anybody has recommendations for places to stay/good deals.

Any places nice to visit while around Charleston?  Good beach recommendations?

Thanks in advance!

Wingate by Wyndham on University Blvd. is the nicest place and not to expensive. I found out the hard way, stayed in a hotel in goose creek and it was disgusting and not in a safe area.

Places to eat in Charleston.  Harbor fish house, Sticky Fingers, Tattooed Moose - get the duck club.

DO NOT STAY AT THE HAWTHORNE SUITES in North Charleston. The place is a mess.

This time of the year any beach would be great. We liked Folly Beach.

The best place to stay is navy lodge, very clean righty next to the base, also no room tax

Went back and read this again, realized you were asking about goose creek not PIR, I would check Navy Lodge see if one is available in goose creek, my son has been serving on the lincoln, I went to visit my son last year for grandsons birth day, sons inlays were staying with him so again navy lodge was the best choice.

remember a ship mate in need is a shipmate in deed

I was down a week ago visiting our son. We stayed at the Days Inn almost across the street from the Base. Address 1430 Redbank Road Goose Creek (South Carolina), SC 29445 Phone 843-797-6000. It wasn't no Holiday Inn but it ran us $120 a night. We basically turn right out of the parking lot drove down less than a mile turned left and met him at the NEX. We weren't allowed on base. While we were there we visited the Patriots Pier I believe its called. They have a Aircraft carrier Yorktown to tour. We didn't have a lot of time to get around Charleston this time but I hear there is plenty of places around to see and eat at. Our sailor didn't really know much of whats there since they are busy doing Navy stuff. I'm sure your son will appreciate having his car as well as the other sailors:-) Be safe on yer trip and God Bless.

Downtown Charleston is very nice to visit.  I recommend Hyman's Seafood downtown.  If you like BBQ, Sticky Fingers is just down the street.  Both are very good.  Downtown Charleston is full of history.  The public beach worked best for us, it is run by the county and was very nice.  I also recommend to stay away from the Hawthorn Suites in North Charleston off of Northwoods Dr.  It's a dump, even at the price.  This place is cockroach central.

Our favorite was Springhill Suites just off of Ashley Phosphate, North Forest Drive.

Springhill Suites had large rooms with seperate sitting area, huge bathrooms, a little kitchen counter sea with another sink, microwave and a good size dorm fridge. 24 hour coffee/hot drink service in lobby. An actual breakfast that can be called that. Reasonable price concessions in lobby. Superior staff.

Wingate by Wyndham also a definite choice.

Fairfield Inn and Suites on Ashley Phosphate was also a pleasurable stay. Just watch out for that Ashley Phosphate/I-26 traffic congestion but there are back roads.

We have done all our reservations through Booking.com and usually get good rates, somewhere in the neighborhood of $85-100/night for any of the three mentioned above.

Stayed at the Days Inn on University (Ladson) one time and all I'm going to say is it was a miserable experience and saved only about $15/night so ....

To do. Aquarium, Fort Sumter, Fort Moultrie (easier and cheaper to get to), Patriots Point, Tattooed Moose, Rutledge Cab Company--it's a restaurant with an awesome BLT sandwich. Always wanted to walk over that huge bridge but only drove over it several times. Maybe one day. Angel Oak Tree.
Sorry, The Days Inn was actually one exit up from University Blvd, on Gateway Drive. Considered Summerville.
