Navy Dads

My son Andy in a letter told me that his A school is about 2 weeks long. After that he will be assigned to "the fleet" for on the job training and then he can pick any job he wants. He is leaning towards Aircraft mechanics. Can anyone else advise me on what is going on here? 2 weeks does not seem very long to me.

Thanks

Andy is on Ship 12 Div 354 10/29 PIR

Is he an "un-designated" Sailor? Do you know what his rate is now?
i SPOKE WITH HIS RECRUITER YESTERDAY AND HE SAID THAT IT IS A BASIC OVERVIEW OF AVIATION TYPE JOBS. aFTER HIS LEAVE FOR THANKSGIVING HE WILL BE ASSIGNED EITHER TO A SHIP OR ON THE GROUND SOMEWHERE. hE USED SOME ACRONNYMS WHICH i DO NOT REMEMBER
ATD or ATG is the acronym
UPDATE: He is an AN, an undesignated Airman. He will be in Fla for about a month then a little time off then he goes to the USS IKE. He will get a chance to see it all and just pick what he wants. This is what his career counselor told him supposedly.
Eric, I may be dead wrong here, and for your son's sake I hope I am, but sending him clear out to a carrier, let him pick and choose a job, send him back to "A" school, just doesn't sound right to me. Keep us posted. I'm curious now what they do.

My son is in Pensacola, he is an AO (Aviation Ordananceman) His A school is only 22 "working days". The problem is the Navy is so backed up it sometimes takes a month or longer to get started. They told my Son (Who's PIR was on 30September) that he would be done with A school on 02November. He is now just getting started in school. So he has been pretty bored. They do assign them to watch, cleaning, Etc. But he is ready to start school, get his orders, and join the fleet. He is tired of waiting. I told him that he needs to get used to "Hurry up and wait" Lol
