Pete, small world, we live in L'Anse, I worked at MTU's Central Heating Plant for 5 years, manage the Power Plant in L'Anse now; most of our Admin staff work in White Pine and live in Ironwood, Bessemer, Bergland.... I know a few other folks from Wakefield. I was going to say I was a Yooper, but 9 out of 10 wouldn't have a clue, lol.

Darryl-  Saw your post.  My wife is from Wakefield, Mi (western end near Ironwood) and we went to Michigan Tech.

Our son arrived at BESS in May 2011, we went to BESS graduation in July, he did get to come home for a quick trip over Labor Day in September, then he was home for 10 days over Christmas/New Years holiday. We live in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Your sailor does need to be in good standing and well organized for a trip home prior to being approved for Leave, and it is all about their school schedules, some get lucky, some don't. Hope all goes well for your sailor!

Michael, We live in Binghamton.  Our son had a classmate who lived in Scranton so he got home for a couple of weekends.  Not sure how much farther Rochester is as the crow flies.  WE went a couple of times to visit.    If you go, stay at the Navy Lodge there.  They have a really nice museum and the USS Nautilus is there.  Well worth the visit and I recommend going to BESS and A school graduations.  Pete

Thanks for all the responses.......my son just confirmed that he believes he will NOT be able to have extended liberty for about a year or more...:(.......but we live in Rochester, NY and should be able to get down to him once he is given weekend liberty

I live in CA and my son started BC on Dec 18, 2010.  He went directly to CT for BESS and from there directly into all of his school.  He never was able to come home until Dec 13, 2011.

It depends on breaks in the school and how classes form up.  When my son went through, classes shut down over Christmas/YE holidays so many sailors went home on leave and this was in the middle of BESS.  While classes are in session, I would guess there is zero chance for leave.  As they progress through their classes, they get elevated status and are allowed more weekend and week night priveledges.  If he is in a program that will have additional schools as a follow on to BESS, there might be an opportunity if his next school is not classing up right away.  In A school, when they were not on duty on the weekend, they could travel within a certain distance (~250 miles) without a problem.  After A school, my son did get about a week and a half of leave.  Bottom line is if you are on the east coast, there could be weekend visits.  If you are not, you will have to wait for formal breaks in the classes that he is attending or completion of his school.
