If you are going to spend anytime on deck then take sunscreen. Both times I did the TC on the Nassau they had several demonstrations on the flight deck, fly bys, cargo transfers etc. I forgot it on my first Tiger cruise and had a good case of sun and wind burn! I am fair skinned and a sunburn sure makes it hard to sleep in those warm racks!! Our cruises were just overnight so we didn't need much in clothes. But a good pair of non slip walking shoes would be good especially if you will be doing much exploring. Those stairs and ramps are steep!

be sure to view the Stennis video in the disucssion are above...there is a good post about Tiger Cruise...do's and don'ts

just remember...it is not a cruise ship but an active war ship...you will not wear as many clothes as you think you need, but remember the flight deck can be COLD....be prepared. Ladders are STEEP ! Watch your footing!!!! Food...well..no one ever died from eating Navy chow.....and prepare to stand in some long lines.

Above all....soak in the experience....talk to as many sailors as possible...they will all have huge smiles as they are back in the states!!!!

You can read my blogs and get a sense of what I experienced in the blog/slide/vidoe link in the disucussion are above......

any more questions as you get close....ASK!!!!!

I am planning for a tiger cruise now. My father will going with me, we are both like a couple of kids waiting on chrismas morning. Already order two navydad tee shirts to wear. Anyone that might have any info on what they wished they had taken with them or anything that was worthless that they had to drag around with them the entire time would be helpful.

Just finished a 6-day transit from Pearl Harbor to Sandy Eggo aboard USS Howard DDG83. I've written an article about this excellent adventure for the newletter of one of my old DD's. It's a "Word" document and I'd be happy to email a copy to any interested. My email address is hbrakob@gmail.com --- send your requests there.

It was a major event in the life of this old Sailor, memories for a lifetime.

One final note - anyone who passes up an opportunity to do this, needs to have their ass kicked!

I'm envious Charles...our crusie was only a 2-day cruise and we were really limited at what we were able to see and do in the time frame! Bet you really enjoyed that extended chance to live the life! at sea!

my son and I just returned from the October 2009 tiger cruise aboard the USS Ronald Reagan. My daughter just completed her first deployment and we got to sail back from pearl harbor, hawaii. We have never been to Hawaii before and were able to spend 5 nights before leaving on the cruise. We took in alot of the local sites and beeches, my son learned how to surf and did very well for his first time. We snorkled in Hanauma bay wild life park that was a really neat experience, we recommend doing if ever in Hawaii. We caught some waves on the North shore in Wiaema bay, boy theay have some big waves up there, so we had to go back the following day. We went out to Pearl Harbor to watch the Reagan come into port and watch all the sailors get off for liberty call that was totally awesome, seeing the enourmous ship come into port. The next day we got to spend with our sailor and get checked in on the ship. This involved being issued lockers and racks. Both my son and I had top racks across from each other, none of the racks are that easy to get into and the top ones dont have the same storage set up, but the tops do have headroom to sit up in bed, if you avoid the light fixture. The top rails of the rack do make it a little easier to get in and out as well, i never did use the foot holds to get in and out of bed. The MWR does a nice job of setting up a schedule of tours and activities for all ages of the tigers to get involved during the cruise, I suggest that you take advantage of all tours given, there is a lot of areas to see and they are very informative and you getr a chance to see how smart our sailors are and have become while serving the Navy. This cruise will give you a great appreciation for our sailors and the job they do for their country and what it takes to live away from your loved ones. During the cruise you will get to see live fire demos , air show demos, small boy ship firepower demos, live night fire demos, the steel beach BBQ, Talent show, play bingo for big money, stay well fed. If you can do this YOU really need to experience this trip. There are not enough words to describe how totally awesome this experience was for me and my 14 year old son, DO IT !!!!!!

If they have a Tiger, your daughter will be the one to know. Let her know that you want to go if they arange a cruise. She'll (your sponsor) submit your name at the appropriate time. When that all occurs you'll have to fill out a medical screening form-- about 4 pages long....lots of yes/no questions about your health and any medical conditions. Most everything else is easy....the crew assigns berthing assignments and your dsughter will have to pay a fee to cover food....mine was $40. Other than that....you plan to have the experience of a lifetime! She will get you info about when to meet the ship and times and places.....that info cannot be transmitted electronically....use snail-mail or develop some sort of code for dates. That is important to emphasize because the entire ship and loose e-mail rights for that sort of communication.......
