John I know his FT is the rating that "destroys cities" but he is also doing weapons training for watch too....sounds like what your son was trained for.  Strange they wouldn't let him take the test.   Yeah the Navy does…

I will call my son and ask him. There is the correct way, the wrong way, and the Navy way of doing things. For example, my son trained to be qualified on the weapons of the watch for his sub, ( pistol, shotgun, rifle ), and the Weps, (weapons…

My son is suppose to go to weapons training somewhere off base but near the base before he is deployed.  Why do some submariners do this training and some do not (my son is an FT)?  Oh and why do some guys end up doing duty/watch more than…

A Week with My Sailor

Posted on September 9, 2009 at 10:28am 0 Comments

My son just went back to base after spending the last week home on leave. Looking back on the days we had together, I just can't imagine how it could have went better. We spent the first two days just sitting on the porch catching each other up on all that had happened in his life, and at home, for the last year. He entertained us with stories about the deployment and pictures of the far away places he had been to. It seems he had a grand adventure into parts of the world that I will never… Continue

The Sacrifice of Seperation

Posted on May 22, 2009 at 10:00am 2 Comments

After not being able to communicate for a long time, my son called his mom this week. The conversation was short, less than three minutes, but in that short time the concerns he expressed spoke volumes. There was no talk of what he had been doing, or of what he would be doing next. There was only concern for those here at home who he had left behind.

He said he had only been ashore long enough to exchange some currency and get to a pay phone. He had no idea how long he would have on… Continue

Families Serve Too

Posted on May 11, 2009 at 11:30am 4 Comments

I've often heard and read that the families of our military men and women serve too. That statement seems perfectly logical when you hear it, and I never really thought too much about it except to agree that our military families made sacrifices to allow their loved ones to serve our country.

The first time I actually experienced this was when my daughter's husband, a Marine, was deployed to Iraq in 2003 and 2004. She moved back in with her mother and I for a while during that time.… Continue

No communication

I feel strange today. Nathan just left on a long deployment, and although I knew it was coming I didn't expect to feel this way. Submariners are truly a different breed of men. It's odd knowing that I can't contact my son, but I can't imagine not being able to contact anyone.......at all. I'm proud of him, but I couldn't do what he does.

Well, it's quite a long story, but the short version is that Travis rejoined the crew just about 10 days before they departed for the Atlantic crossing. He is rated as MM (Sub)(Weapons), or what they used to call a Torpedoman's Mate, although because of his late entrance into the crew he's not listed as that on the current Watch Bill.

I hope the guys have fun in Norway.

M. L., “Welcome Aboard”. I am glad that you have joined us. I see that you have been busy, jumping in and getting involved, I like that. Check out some of the other groups and some of the discussions that are going on. This site is for you to use and enjoy. We love to talk about our sailors around here and we have been known to brag on them a little. We are also here to support and encourage each other. After all we are all in this together. I have two sons and they are both in the military. My youngest joined the Air Force 5 years ago. My oldest joined the Navy and is stationed on the USS Abraham Lincoln CVN 72. Please thank Nathan for his service to this great country from an old Vietnam Vet. Thank you for raising a fine young man.

Welcome to NavyDads M.L. ! I'm sure you'll find the site as fun and useful as I have. Explore and make some friends, add your comments to a discussion or two, read the postings in the various groups-- even start one or two. I have! If you have any questions or concerns about your sailor and what he is going through...ask! I'm sure someone here will have the answer or can point you in the right direction to find out. I'm lucky enough to have two sailors- my son Eric just returned from a seven-month cruise on the carrier Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71) and my daughter Kat returned last fall from a seven-month cruise on the carrier Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72). And M.L. this is a great place to brag about your sailor as well! So join in and let us know how Nathan is doing! Best Regards- Paul

M.L., Welcome Aboard! I found navyformoms in searching for answers to my son's future. I just knew their had to be a site for dads like n4m's but I was wrong. So I started this site so us dads would also have a place to call home. I'm new at this and I hope this site will benefit fathers that come behind us. So jump right in share concerns, join groups, share info, and show off your sailor. I'm so glad to find out their are so many proud Navy Dads just like myself. I hope this site benefits you and your family throughout your sons journey in the Navy. Thank Nathan for his service for me and thanks again for joining us.
Sincerely, EG
