Mike K commented on John Augustine's group 'Navy Nukes'
I remember my sailor talking about the three phases but do not recall the if one screws up they all get pushed back.  That did not happen with his class.  Each phase lasts about a month from the start of A school and by phase three they…

As I mentioned before, my sailor passed his prototype boards 13 months ago and is now an EM on the Springfield.  Navy Nuclear Power training has no real equivalent in the civilian world.  Nowhere in the civilian world is so much…

Best advice is to obviously fully support your sailor and encourage him.  This training is really really tough and the stress levels are very high.  Make sure he takes advantage of all the help he is offered, it is NOT a sign of weakness…

Usually the I means indoctrination division.  That is usually where they learn the specifics about where they are at and where they are going as well as what is expected.

I just found that "Submarine" documentary on Netflix and watched the first episode and it is really good.  I also looked to see if they had the video "Carrier" and they do so there is another resource.  They also have a…

Yeah, my son has no real problems with his choice of sub duty.  Like your son, he said the food leaves something to be desired at times though.  The first deployment is a real stress machine as they get aboard as NUBs(non useful bodies)…

Tom, they stayed for 6-7 days each for three of the ports and 4 days at the other.  He had an international cell phone so he called from each port too which was really great.  They had plenty of time to sight see and explore.  He took…

My sailor is on a fast attack sub and yes they go out on 6 months deployments.  He just recently returned from his first deployment and will go out again sometime in early 2013.  They have various underways while at home port.  While…

Archie, all 3 schools for ETs and EMs are 24 weeks each.  A School for MMs is shorter by about 6 weeks as I understand it with Power and Prototype being the same.  I should say that Prototype is kind of fluid as there is no formal end per…

Yeah, I don't understand the leave bit as far as Christmas/New Years is concerned.  When my sailor was there he had just started Power School after Thanksgiving.  He said they shut the school down for two weeks and actually encouraged…

Jeffrey, I believe they do request a rate but as was said, it all finally depends on ASVAB and the needs of the Navy.  Keep in mind that for every 10 Nukes, there are 2 ETs, 3 EMs, and 5 MMs.  That has been the breakdown for quite a long…

William.  I just had a talk with my sailor who is stationed in Groton and asked about sub pay.  He told me that they start to receive their sub pay once actually on the boat but the pay is retroactive to the first day they signed up for…

Lala, speaking purely for myself I think we should probably keep politics off this board.  My opinions and my sailors happen to be considerably different than yours in regards to our current CIC and I feel that politics will diminish the…

To all posting here it is always suggested that for OPSEC reasons, last names should not be used either of the sailor or of the person posting.  I don't mean to be rude but just passing on information.

Thanks to all for the warm welcome. As I become more familiar with the site I hope to take more advantage of the opportunities and become more involved. Actually just heard from Steve this afternoon for the first time since he shipped to SC. He got the box we went with the cell phone and computer, but the mail room can not find the other. Oh well, we all know how that goes. He is doing well, bored to tears and can not wait to start A school next Monday.

Mike “Welcome Aboard”. I am glad that you have joined us. I see that you have joined a group, jumping in and getting involved I like that. Check out some of the other groups and some of the discussions that are going on. This site is for you to use and enjoy. We love to talk about our sailors around here and we have been known to brag on them a little. We are also here to support and encourage each other. After all we are all in this together. I have two sons and they are both in the military. My youngest joined the Air Force 5 years ago. My oldest joined the Navy and is stationed on the USS Abraham Lincoln CVN 72. Please thank Steve for his service to this great country from an old Vietnam Vet. Thank you for your service to this great country as well. Thank you for raising a fine young man.

Welcome to NavyDads Mike! I'm sure you'll find the site as fun and useful as I have. Explore and make some friends, add your comments to a discussion or two, read the postings in the various groups-- even start one or two. I have! If you have any questions or concerns about your sailor and what he is going through...ask! I'm sure someone here will have the answer or can point you in the right direction to find out. I'm lucky enough to have two sailors- my son Eric just returned from a seven-month cruise on the carrier Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71) and my daughter Kat returned last fall from a seven-month cruise on the carrier Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72). And Mike this is a great place to brag about your sailor as well! So join in and let us know how Steve is doing! And Mike- thank you for your service to our great country. Best Regards- Paul

Mike, Welcome Aboard! I found navyformoms in searching for answers to my son's future. I just knew their had to be a site for dads like n4m's but I was wrong. So I started this site so us dads would also have a place to call home. I'm new at this and I hope this site will benefit fathers that come behind us. So jump right in share concerns, join groups, share info, and show off your sailor. I'm so glad to find out their are so many proud Navy Dads just like myself. I hope this site benefits you and your family throughout your sons journey in the Navy. Thank Steve for his service for me and yours as well. Thanks again for joining us.
Sincerely,EG
