It's actually worse than that ... your family will actually increase spending to $78,000, but, because they were expecting to spend $80,000, they claim they cut their spending by $2,000. Only in DC ...

Hey ct, you just lost 50% of the votes.  Not sure how you get elected that way.  Good luck, though.

Solving the problem will be very very painful for everyone.  Painting over the problem will make solving the problem later even more painful.  What politician is going to promise you that -- and if he/she did, would they even get…

Well, capitalism at work.  Too bad because the video is a great illustration of what's wrong with our country (at least in part).  I hope she did send a copy of the tape to Congress like she said.  Not that it'd make a…

Pat- thought I'd send this link (Click for CVN-72 Photos) to see the kind of work that the media photographers on the Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72) are generating. Besides this sort of stuff, there is also a lot of work for the paper onboard.

Generally the MC folks stay in theri area of expertise- as far as I know though there is some exchange of job roles depending on needs naturally. Biggest issue was with the stint as S-2 for Eric and S-5 for Kat. But I guess all must do their time in galley and in trash duty!

Eric's on the Roosevelt- currently in the Gulf of Oman in support of Enduring Freedom. Kat is on the Abraham Lincoln which just returned about 2 weeks ago from their stint in the mid-East and liking the fact that after 7-months she sees land again!!

Ahoy Pat- see your sailor is an MC as is my daughter (she is stationed on the Abraham Lincoln). I noted on your post in teh Reagan post you were not too sure what the MC rate would do-- there is quite an extensive media shop on each carrier. On the Lincoln they publish a newspaper- The Penny Press (click for link) and Kat writes artivlcles for that. Naturally they have editors and lyout/design folks as well. Inaddition photographers for the paper as well as for media pics for release and publication other places. Kat also did a radio show or two for the ships radio- not all the carriers have active stations. Depending on what your son's speciality is he could be doing a variety of other things as well- Paul

At the top of your page an information bar will pop up. click on temporarily allow scripted windows. Once you allow the script highlight the adress again. Now a box will show up in the top left. Type the web adress in it. then hit add comment and it will show up. Or go to this site it will show you how to do this. help.ning.com . Type in the search box ( hyperlink ) it will show you step by step.

Thanks to all for the warm welcome. In all honesty though, my wife signed me up without my knowledge, but that is okay since I signed her up at Navy Moms without her knowing. Our son joined the Navy just a month or so after getting his BA from the University of Houston but had first brought up the idea of joining the Navy a year or so earlier. At the time, his mother and I were a bit concerned that he might forgoe his college education, but he took our advice and did nothing in haste and conducted some sober and meaningful research. He initially considered OCS, but because of various reasons he ultimately decided to get some enlisted experience first. I do not think he has dismissed the idea of working his way into a commission. He left for RTC in mid-January and is currently in A-School at the Defense Information School (DINFOS) at Ft. Meade, Md. His rating is (or will be) Mass Communication Specialist (MC), which is a rare rating that was formed with the consolidation of something like four older ratings (Journalism, Lithography, Photography, and Draftsman). I believe DINFOS only produces 76 MC's per year, though they also produce equivalent personnel for the other service branches. Ft. Meade is technically an Army base, and Dylan tells us there are only about 100-150 Navy personnel there. He is due to graduate from A-School in Oct., and, though he is having a great experience there, he is anxious to get out into the fleet. Although his rating could take him essentially anywhere in the world, his preferences are to either serve on a forward deployed ship or embedded as a combat correspondent (a prospect that makes his mother and I especially nervous). We are are both very proud of him and have been suportive of his decisions. We never pass up a chance to brag on him to our friends, or to strangers for that matter.
