Paul... Congragulations! My daughter has been in DEP for about 10 months and she leaves for Basic in about three weeks. I would suggest that as you leave this group, you transfer over to the Basic Training Group. I believe you will find it every bit…

I leave you all today! My son will be sworn in tomorrow morning and then off to Great Lakes.  I learned a lot from the postings in this group. Good luck to all! See you in the Boot Camp group!

This is all very new to me, but I'm learning. There is no military history at all in my family, so when my son came to me with the idea of joining The Navy, I was flabergasted, shocked, and amazed. I didn't see it coming. When I asked him why the Navy, he replied "I love boats, and I love being on the water". So in retrospect, I really shouldn't have been all that surprised. And he's going to get to do plenty of that in The Navy! He swore in on 20080724 and will leave for Great Lakes Recruit Training Center on 20090730. I'm so proud of him for making this decision and want to learn as much as I can so that I can support him fully. We've always been very close and the more I know about what's going to be going on in his life, the more likely it is to stay that way. So forgive me if ask alot of dumb questions in the next year or so, and thanks in advance your help, support, and information.

That is great. I just got off the phone with Andy. He's at Bass Pro Shop in Hampton. He's liking being back on U.S. soil. HE comes home next week on leave.

Hey Ron. Andy's ship has come home to Norfolk. It was a long 7 months. He looks great. He can really tell Brandon what a BM's life is like now. He has some cut up arms and a greater appreciation for the U.S. He was patriotic before, now he really is. I may start calling him Dorothy; "There's no place like home." He has however already said that he sort of misses being out to sea. He'll be home for leave next week. Our best to Brandon.

Ron, I saw your post in the Boot Camp group and it sounds a lot like what my son wrote while he was at RTC. It does get better with each letter. When my son came home on leave after A School, he brought with him every letter we had sent and it meant a lot when he told us how much they meant to him and helped he keep his sanity and focused while he was there. We have all the letters he sent to us while he was there and when he read them, it said it was like living through it all over again. Now he is in Japan and doing great!

Hey Ron. How's Brandon? Andy is serving on the Bainbridge. He's been to Spain, Turkey, Kenya, Seychelles and Bahrain. He is having the time of his life, but working hard, too. BMs rock and roll and work.

Hi Ron, saw the crossed anchors and had to check it out. I was a Bm2 in the navy a while back 85-89. If your son loves the water, this is the rate for him. The ship to shore ratio when I was in was heavy on the ship side. Sounds like he is looking forward to a BM. It is a lot of fun, but alot of work. If you ever have any questions feel free to ask me. My son is currently in boot camp, and spent 15 months in dep. He is going to be a diver. Loved your videos, and wish i would of found them before he left, they seem to show a lot more current info than what we saw.

Ron, sorry to hear about the death in the family. It's always tough. Hope you have a great vacation. I guarantee it will be too short. It won't be any time at all until Brandon catches that flight to GL. Then it's about a forever and a half until you get the visitor's pack. Andy did not enjoy the waiting on "A" school, but he did enjoy school. He is having a good time at sea with the Eisenhower strike group. He has been at sea for about 2 weeks. The hardest part, he says is the constantly changing time zones and getting enough sleep with all the OPS that BMs have to take care of. He will be taking the PO3 exam on the 19th of Mar. He is usually the POIC now on his line crew during UNREP and he is the windlass operator on sea & anchor detail. He's gotten his 2nd class swimmer qual and is on the boat crew and also is getting his BMOW and flightdeck PQS. He sounds great, but tired. Best wishes to Brandon.

Andy got home about 2315 on Thursday. We have enjoyed his being here. We were able to get a roundtrip flight for him so he doesn't have to drive back on Wednesday to NORVA and then back home on Saturday. Yea! He will get to attend the ROTC ball.

Yeah Ron, good to hear from you. Andy texted me and is leaving NORVA about noon. It's about 8 hrs. We're looking forward to his being home until next Wednesday. Then the crazy thing is going back to Norfolk and then driving back on Friday evening so he can attend his brothers Senior year Military ball with the ROTC. Andy was the CO of the unit two years ago as a senior and now his bro. Ethan is the CO his senior year. Andy's ship deploys toward the end of the month. Actual date is classified. He is scheduled to be deployed until early fall. He is looking forward to it. He said that on the ship it is better to be at sea than in port. Tell Brandon to hang in there. He can email Andy at hoganar@ddg96.navy.mil Andy said he would give Brandon the straight scoop on BM. He's not really great at answering email, but he will get around to it. God bless.

Hey Ron, they did indeed do "Unrep." They also did several "FAS" ( fueling at sea) several times. Helm watch is steering the ship. Andy described it as 55 minutes of boredom and moments of terror and chaos. The underway replenishment is not as hectic as the FAS. The BM could be using Unrep for both. Andy's ship differentiates the two. UNREP is bringing on food and supplies while FAS is taking on fuel only. Andy said they did boat ops and flight ops many many times. He likes both of those. Andy went on Friday and took his 2nd class swimmer's exam. That's a requirement for going out on the rib boat. He passed. It's a 100 yard swim using four different strokes. They tell you which ones to use. It's go/no-go test. If you touch bottom or side of pool, "no-go" I talked with him today, he's loving it. He's a deck-rigger for FAS. He stands 6 hrs on, 12 off underway, but they were under-manned for this training cruise.
