Hello everyone and thank you for making me feel welcome. My son, Cory, has not yet joined the Navy. He will be taking the ASVAB either tomorrow or sometime next week. He is going for Master of Arms. Does anyone have any advise for us before he takes the ASVAB. He doesn't test well (even in school) and the first test he took he scored a 45. He was told that he needs to score at least a 50 to enlist in the Navy.

Comment by Paul Olson on February 10, 2013 at 4:25pm My son is in the same ship when it came to tests and school in general. He first took the test with the recruiter in a busy McDonald's where he had met filled with a bunch of female volleyball players-not the greatest testing environment for anyone let alone my son. He did ok, I don't recall his score but my wife picked up the Kalpan ASVAB study book, a big blue study guide, ~11 bucks on Amazon. He studied this as well as he could. He took the formal test and did very well, low 90's. He talked to his recruiter and came up with a plan to go Hospital Corpsman (HM). His recruiter commented that he had never seen such an improvement from pre-test score to the first ASVAB and actually asked how he did it. He stated that he would recommend this book to others. My son just PIR'd and is settling into A-school in San Antonio as we speak. He can retake the ASVAB several times until he gets the ASVAB score to he needs for the job class he wants. Don't let the recruiter push him into something he doesn't want to do. The recruiters job is to get guys in, that is how he is rewarded.
Also, if your son is planning on going in, get the physical training requirements from his recruiter and have him work toward those now as there were several SR's held back unable to meet the requirements! One guy in my son's division missed the run by 5 seconds! The reality is that if your son is close to those goals, he'll have no problem, they'll push him to make it. However, if he's in poor shape now, and nowhere close to the minimum requirements, he will not become an Ironman in a few 8 weeks. They really don't get a huge amount of physical training as my son has commented, much to my surprise.
There are study guides available with practice tests at most book stores. Pick one up for him....it may make all of the difference!
