Got a question about MEPS medical report
My daughter went through MEPS, she wanted MA, there was a spot available and she had a good enough ASVAB score but...
they said no way because her eyes were not correctable to 20/20
we called BS and had her checked (again) by her Ophthalmologist.  He's an eye surgeon.  Not just a Walmat Optician.
and he said she's 20/20 in one eye, 20/100 (correctable to 20/20) in the other eye.  So she's 20/20 wearing her glasses.
we submitted her doctors report to her recruiter and he said he'd send it up the line
my question is what is the likely outcome?

  • 1) they accept the doc report

  • 2) they retest her

  • 3) tough luck sailor

Final Status Update: The Navy basically "Tough Luck Sailor".  They did not accept our doctor's evaluation.  Not really surprising.  But...I have a way around the system by using the system.  After she gets deployed, she could find an excuse for the Navy doctor to examine her eyes, new prescription, broken glasses, or whatever.  She would then be able to take the eye test to validate the new prescription or whatever and that would then become part of her record.  Assuming that she does evaluate as 20/20 and normal depth perception as our doc said, I would think that she could then ask to be reclassified as an MA.  Or another Rate that has those same requirements if she chooses.

Thanks Paul and Jim.

I'll keep pushing.

No stone left unturned.

If the recruiter in charge does not handle it, you need to ask for the Zone Supervisor, if nothing happens there, the next one you should ask and speak to is the Assistant Chief Recruiter, then the Chief Recruiter. IF all that fails, then my next step would be to contact the Commanding Officer. I would wait no more than 1-2 days between contacts (ZS, ACR, CR).
I can tell you that the last thing a recruiter wants (or needs) is negative attention.

I find this interesting. This is a link where we get our information about all the ratings. This information rating card was updated February of this year. It makes no reference like it used to concerning vision requirements.

Well, we finally got something back from our recruiter.  He said that they said that they did not see any difference in her depth perception and that still disqualifies her from being an MA.  Though he did not explicitly say that they accepted or rejected the doctors report on her eyes being correctable to 20/20 he talked only of the depth perception disqualification.  Looking at all the information that i have available, bad depth perception is not disqualifying.  Only color perception  and 20/20 correction are the requirements.  For me, depth perception would be important for a cop.  But not in the requirements that i can find.  Even on this site the requirements are exactly what i find on http://www.public.navy.mil/bupers-npc/enlisted/community/security/P...

Does anyone know of anything different?

I will be checking in with her recruiter on Tuesday after the holiday.

1....Yes...Always need women

2.....MA's....not so much...no leverage there

3.....She is under NO obligation at this point...If it is not what she wants....walk on....

That's what we're hoping for.
One of the ways we're looking at is...
You need females,

You need MA's

You screwed up

Do right by our daughter or she walks.

I would guess that her best bet is to have the Recruiter push for a retest. With the supporting report, she might just pull it off!
