No More "Sailor in a Box" - From RTC- Posted 5 Sept 2019

Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

We talk about Holiday Routine at Boot Camp - here's the skinny

Sunday/Holiday Routine allows recruits to attend religious services and observe Federal holidays. From 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. recruits are able to: attend religious services, read and study, hygiene, perform uniform upkeep, write and read letters, or clean their rack and personal locker.

Important RTC/PIR Changes

RTC is making important changes to polices regarding PIR Guest Access as well as Bag Checks and Restriction Policies. Take the time to read thru these and be prepared when you head to Great Lakes for PIR.

Hang in there Stephanie. Our daughter left 7/29. It's not easy getting thru this, that's for sure! I went thru Marine Corps boot camp, and honestly, it seems that going thru sending my daughter to boot camp is harder than going thru boot camp itself! My wife and I have really relied on each other thru this in addition to the online communities we have found. Myself, here on Navy Dads, and my wife has made some connections on Navy For Moms. Now that we have an actual PIR date, we've both been able to connect with other parents who have SR's in the same division and that has been a blessing. Keep doing what you're doing, stay connected, stay busy, and these next 8 weeks will be over before you know it, and you'll be cheering him on in the stands. You got this Mom. And, by the way, thanks to your son for his service!

Thanks Brad and Chris...love both of your advice. He called and said he was boarding plane from RDU to Chicago and will be able to call around midnight.

Jerri - Sorry took so long to get back. I have been super busy. I hope all is well with your daughter!

-------------------------------------------------

I received a call from my son again this past Sunday (ship 12, division 349). He is doing great. He passed his physical and swim tests. He said he is in a push division, so they are doing things a little quicker.

One thing he did tell me was that the videos on YouTube are nothing like the real thing. He said they make it look like Disney. That being said, he went in there expecting the worst. He said some people get intimidated quick and start crying. It's very demanding physically and mentally. He said after the calls home when everyone is emotional, they start screaming at you to dry your tears. It's all a mind game and he said everything there is done for a reason. If you roll with the punches and do what you're told, you'll do just fine. He did say the food is great and he gained about 10 pounds.

Boot Camp has always gotten the job done and there's no reason to think things are any different now than they were 30 years ago.

I am looking forward to PIR. 4 more weeks!

Stephanie:  We know the feeling, except with girls.  We lived through three being teen-agers at the same time, then in consecutive years we had - one who couldn't make it home from college because of a blizzard at Thanksgiving (empty chair at the table for the first time in 18 years); the oldest finished BC and was deployed (empty chair again); and then all three made it and we realized how noisy it could be.  LOL!  When your Son makes the "I'm a Sailor" call and then you watch the PIR, you will be so very, very proud.  We're all proud of what your Son is doing, believe me.
