Welcome to the NavyDads Media Center !

Share your recommendations for books and other media that you think would be of interest to other NavyDads.  I have numerous books I've read, and recently listened to via audiobook download, that generally concentrate on WWII Navy history that tell the recent combat history of the Navy and show where many current Navy doctrines and traditions have evolved from.  I find the stories compelling and make me even more proud to have a daughter that is a Navy veteran and a son on active duty and part of this long tradition of service.  Won't you share your recommendations as well?

I just finished Gods and Generals and the second part of its trilogy, Killer Angels. They are novels written about the lead up and early part of the Civil War and Gettysburg.

All the books are excellent....have not seen Unbroken, but saw American Sniper yesterday afternoon.....excellent movie!

Oh yes, while I'm mentioning videos/movies. Unbroken and American Sniper are both very good. Probably more accurate than the Lone Survivor movie, too. I liked that movie, but was disappointed after reading how much it exaggerated the number of actual enemy combatants. But that's Hollywood artistic license, I suppose. A friend who read Unbroken said the book was excellent, which is what you should probably expect from Laura Hillenbrand.

sounds interesting.....will keep that in the back of my mind! Probably will re-read Genius: The Life and Science of Richard Feynman again before I get back to military stuff....

Paul-not a book, but I recently purchased the dvd "Rickover:The Birth of Nuclear Power" from PBS. 2 hrs. long and worth watching. You can find it on pbs.org

All of my book reading lately has been astronomy/science related.

current read:

from Amazon:

The most complete history of the U.S. Navy SEALs—from their roots in World War II to their celebrated efforts in the War on Terror—written with the unprecedented cooperation of the Naval Special Warfare community. The book will tie-in with a fall 2014 PBS series.

Over the last fifty years, a small Navy unit has evolved into the world’s most celebrated fighting force: the U.S. Navy SEALs. Until now, their stories have been sealed in the chambers of operational secrecy—and the brotherhood of SEAL anonymity. Drawing on exclusive interviews with more than 100 former special operators, highly respected retired SEAL Dick Couch and award-winning author Bill Doyle record their stories in Navy Seals and give us the epic chronicle these legendary warriors deserve.

Navy Seals charts the SEALs story, from their origins in the daring Naval Combat Demolition Teams, Underwater Demolition Teams, Scouts and Raiders commando units, and OSS Operational Swimmers of WWII to their coming of age in Vietnam and rise to glory in Iraq and Afghanistan after 9/11. Illustrated with 40-pages of photographs, here are the greatest missions of the world’s most legendary special operators—in their own words.

just finished:

from GoodReads:

One of the great untold stories of World War II finally comes to light in this thrilling account of Torpedo Squadron Eight and their heroic efforts in helping an outmatched U.S. fleet win critical victories at Midway and Guadalcanal. These 35 American men--many flying outmoded aircraft--changed the course of history, going on to become the war's most decorated naval air squadron, while suffering the heaviest losses in U.S. naval aviation history.
Mrazek paints moving portraits of the men in the squadron, and exposes a shocking cover-up that cost many lives. Filled with thrilling scenes of battle, betrayal, and sacrifice, A DAWN LIKE THUNDER is destined to become a classic in the literature of World War II.

It was worthwhile!!! Recommended!

I'm reading Black May: The Epic Story of the Allies' Defeat of the German U-Boats in May 1943
Michael Gannon (Author)
Good account of the battle that went on in the North Atlantic and how the U Boat packs were defeated. It focuses on a large convoy, its escorts and the largest pack of U Boats. Very interesting to learn about the research and use of mathmatics that went into fighting that part of the war.
