David, I seen that on Navy news.  I said a prayer for all those aboard and those left back home.  He will LOVE it.  My daughter was stationed there for 3 years.  She was ...um when she traveled it was on the BlueRidge.....Yes it's a must!  We did Christmas and New Years  2010.

Victor, Glad you had a Wonderful time, we did too.  Sounds like you hit the high points, did you stay at a Hostel?  weren't those black beans in Everything?!  We also visited the distruction of the boob and the rebirth, one of my favorite trips.  The people are so Nice and Everything was clean....all I have is GREAT things to say about Japan.  We road, the buses, trains, even the bullet train  :)

Can't wait to hear more from both of you, to re-live my experiences thro you. LOL

Made it back from Yokosuka and I must say other than the 12 hour flight it was awesome!  Had a tour of the base, the surrounding temples and the giant Buddha, Yokohama, Tokyo, the royal palace,  climbed Mt. Fuji, and spent the whole time with my son the sailor!  I must say the train system was impressive and everything was clean no matter what city we were in.   The local food was an adventure in itself, some descriptions do not translate well.  It was a trip I will never forget.

Yesterday at 11:00am my son pulled out of San Diego on the USS Ron Reagan in route to Yokosuka. I look forward to connecting with you all in the coming months as he gets settled in and of course, we have plans to do Christmas in Japan!

Tomorrow is my big day, leave at 6 AM fly to Houston then onto Japan, about 7500 miles total.  19 hours travel time with the layover, so excited I have hardly slept for the last few days...  I will let you know how it goes.

I was over there about two years ago and found the pricing to be very reasonable. You can reasonably find some places for less than $100.per night. Have your son look around for you. Yes I would encourage you to get out  see the sights. The trains are wonderful and cheap. We got into Tokyo one day on a 40 minute train ride about and was able to see a good bit of the city. We went to a live Sumo wrestling match and were able  to go to the top of the Tokyo tower and walked around the Imperial palace and government offices. Lots of stuff to do within an hours travel time. In and around Yokosuka there is a Maritime Museum and fairly near by is one of the largest  Buddha temples with the a very large bronze Buddha very cool to see.

Hello all:

Like so many on this list I have a sailor in Japan, Yokosuka actually and the family wants to go over to visit her.  I have been going through the travel guides, but still have many questions:

1)  We are in Dallas, what would be considered a good price for an airline ticket?  Is it always best to fly through LA?

2)  I have always heard how expensive Japan is and yet I am seeing some hotel prices under $100 per night.  Is it possible to stay clean and safely in Yosokuka for under $100 per night?  Any recommendations beyond the tour books you all have tried?

3) If you are only going to be there for a week, is it worth trying to get out of Yokosuka to sight see or are there enough tourist things to do there without hitting other cities in Japan?

Thanks for sharing your experience,

Roger
