Navy Dads

I guess I'm just looking for a comforting word. My son Cody is a rescue swimmer deployed on the Stennis but transferred to the Mobike Bay for logistic reasons. Right before he ported in Manila he got ill. He has been very sick with diarrhea and losing weight for over ten days. He said he was being airlifted to see the "flight doc" today sometime. Anyway the wife and my wife are very upset. I know he's in good hands. Are there any ways to get updates on a sailor without causing issues for said sailor? Thanks!

Does he have his cell phone? Do you know where he got airlifted to?

I'm sure there are ways to find out his condition. At the very least, if he's in a hospital they can surely get word to him to call or Skype you. My son got sick while in Okinawa and we used an app called "Voxer." It works like a walkie talkie between cell phones as long as he has an internet connection.

I imagine if allowed he would have his cellphone with him. He sent me a Facebook message at 3am Louisiana time saying he was flying out today. No time. I think he will be back on Stennis to see doc. I emailed a shipmate who is sponsoring my wife for tiger cruise. Maybe she will reply. Thanks. I will try voxer. Sounds good. Much thanks.

At this time of his career in the fleet, he would be able to have all of his electronics. This is a tough one when they get sick or injured and be half way around the world from you. I know how frustrating it can be. Best of luck to you and your son!

Thanks. Appreciated. The navy has a lot invested in him and I know they have very good medical care. It's his wife and mother who are most worried. Hopefully I hear something later today. Thanks again. It's always helpful to hear from a fellow parent of one of our sailors.
I have heard back from his shipmate. She is going to let me know when he get aboard the Stennis to see the Dr. Thanks again for your replies. Helped a lot!
Just wanted to update. Cody was airlifted to the Stennis and is undergoing steroid and antibiotic treatments. He has severe infected colon. His deployment is over and he will be flown to Balboa in San Diego in a couple days. If he responds well to the treatments he can continue to serve in a non-flying capacity. If not, his colon will have to be removed and he will be discharged. I know my son and he will be devastated should this happen. He accomplished a lot getting to be a rescue swimmer. We're just praying a lot. Thanks again for your advice and replies.

Thanks for the update Scott. Something similar happened to my son when he was deployed to Okinawa. However, it turned out that he has crohn's disease. So I hope and pray that this is not the case with Cody.

The diagnosis is ulcerative colitis. So in the same "family" but not as severe. Sorry to hear this about your son. Thank for the prayers.

Good deal. It's treatable then. He will get to heal and stay in the Navy.

I hope so. He was told as long as he has no repeated flare ups and it can be controlled with medication, he can stay in according to the doctor.
