Welcome to Your Sailor's next stop: “A” School at Naval Weapons Station Charleston, SC

If your Sailor’s orders say Charleston, South Carolina, they will be reporting to Naval Weapons Station Charleston, part of Joint Base Charleston.

Charleston is one of the Navy’s most important technical training hubs — especially for nuclear propulsion and submarine-related careers. If your Sailor is headed here, they are entering one of the most academically challenging and highly respected training pipelines in the Navy.

Where Is It?

Naval Weapons Station Charleston is located in Goose Creek, just outside the historic city of Charleston along the South Carolina coast.

Joint Base Charleston combines:

  • Naval Weapons Station Charleston

  • Charleston Air Force Base

It is one of the largest military communities in the Southeast and supports tens of thousands of active-duty members, reservists, civilians, and families.

What “A” School Happens in Charleston?

Charleston is best known for housing the Navy’s nuclear training pipeline.

The primary command your Sailor may attend is:

Naval Nuclear Power Training Command (NNPTC)

This command oversees the first phase of training for Sailors entering the Nuclear Field (NUKE) program.

What Ratings Train Here?

Sailors selected for the Nuclear Field program attend “A” School in Charleston for one of three ratings:

  • Machinist’s Mate (MMN) – Nuclear mechanical systems

  • Electrician’s Mate (EMN) – Nuclear electrical systems

  • Electronics Technician (ETN) – Nuclear reactor instrumentation & controls

These Sailors will go on to serve aboard:

  • Aircraft carriers

  • Ballistic missile submarines

  • Fast attack submarines

What Is Nuclear “A” School Like?

Families should understand — this is one of the most academically demanding schools in the entire U.S. Navy.

Training includes:

  • Advanced mathematics

  • Physics fundamentals

  • Electrical theory

  • Mechanical systems

  • Reactor principles

Class days are long. Study time is required. Academic standards are strict.

This program is fast-paced and challenging — but it also opens doors to:

  • Advanced follow-on training (Nuclear Power School & Prototype)

  • Leadership opportunities

  • High-level technical careers inside and outside the Navy

How Many Sailors Train There?

The nuclear training pipeline in Charleston trains thousands of Sailors each year. Because this is a specialized technical field, the student population is focused and academically driven.

Sailors remain under structured training rules, though liberty increases as they progress successfully.

What Families Should Expect

If your Sailor is headed to Charleston:

  • Communication is more consistent than boot camp.

  • The academic pressure can be intense — encouragement matters.

  • Weather is mild compared to Great Lakes (hot summers, mild winters).

  • Many Sailors remain in Charleston for multiple phases of nuclear training.

Charleston is also a historic and family-friendly coastal city with strong military support services.

Why This Assignment Matters

Being selected for Nuclear Field training is competitive. It reflects strong ASVAB scores and the Navy’s confidence in your Sailor’s academic ability.

This is not just another technical school — it is one of the Navy’s most elite enlisted career paths.

If your Sailor is going to Charleston, they are preparing to operate and maintain some of the most advanced propulsion systems in the world.
