After your Sailor graduates from Navy boot camp at Recruit Training Command (RTC) Great Lakes, their journey is just getting started. Graduation (PIR — Pass-In-Review) marks the completion of basic training, but it is actually the transition point into their Navy career field. Within a short time after graduation — sometimes the same day or within a few days — your Sailor will receive orders and travel to their next command for A-School, where they learn the skills for their specific Navy job (rating).

A-School is technical training that works much like a trade school or career college. The length depends on the rating and can range from a few weeks to many months. During this phase, communication usually becomes easier and more frequent than during boot camp. Sailors typically have their phones again (with usage rules), more regular schedules, and increasing levels of liberty as they progress. Some schools allow off-base privileges after a certain period and good performance.

Travel to A-School is arranged by the Navy. Families usually do not handle the travel logistics. Some Sailors leave directly from Great Lakes; others may have a brief holding period before departing. If A-School is also located in Great Lakes, they may simply transfer across base.

For families, this phase often feels less stressful than boot camp because contact improves and your Sailor has more independence. However, expectations remain high — they must pass exams, maintain physical standards, and meet conduct requirements to continue training. After A-School, they will receive orders to their first duty station or possibly continue on to advanced training (C-School).

Boot camp builds the Sailor — A-School builds the skill. And from here, their Navy career truly begins.
