No More "Sailor in a Box" - From RTC- Posted 5 Sept 2019

Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

We talk about Holiday Routine at Boot Camp - here's the skinny

Sunday/Holiday Routine allows recruits to attend religious services and observe Federal holidays. From 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. recruits are able to: attend religious services, read and study, hygiene, perform uniform upkeep, write and read letters, or clean their rack and personal locker.

Important RTC/PIR Changes

RTC is making important changes to polices regarding PIR Guest Access as well as Bag Checks and Restriction Policies. Take the time to read thru these and be prepared when you head to Great Lakes for PIR.

we're consistent in everything we post about PIR: advise you read http://www.navydads.com/forum/topics/helpful-info-from-a-dad-who just to read one dads recent PIR experience and that you review the series of links we have in the PIR group......and BTW...we advise folks take a shuttle to the base...traffic can be a hassle though many have no issues....all depends on your schedule and comfort level with driving in the area and what your preferences are......PIR will be packed and there will a lotta folks there.....

Paul - Thanks, we have that all filled out and ready to go. Just trying use what little time we have wisely i.e. not waiting in line to leave RTC. Strangely enough that same Metra station was how I got to GL...there was an airline strike so we had an 18 hour train ride from Harrisburg, PA. Good times...

Todd - Thankfully no, he's actually coming back to Pensacola on Sunday. You get mixed messages on various sites about the best parking, best time to get there, etc. Guess we'll play it by ear. Things certainly have changed in 46 years. I remember very few spectators at my 1966 PIR.

BillG, I assume your SR is staying at GL for A-School if you plan on going to Chicago to tour. Note that your SR may have up to 5 hours after PIR to get processed into A-school.  Don't plan on a quick escape on the train after PIR.

not sure that is a wise move...though the Metra station is really handy, think you have to check in at the Visitors Center by the main gate.....there is parking on base, but you'll need a parking pass which you can get with the password from the form letter your sailor sent out: http://www.bootcamp.navy.mil/consent1.asp

Bill G try this map from an earlier post on the PIR group

We just received the "letter" from my SR. Ship 13, Div. 233, cant wait for PIR in August.

Good luck to your son and have fun at PIR.

Paul - Thanks for the quick response, we plan on parking at the train station, since we're all going into Chicago after the PIR and I wanted to make sure it wouldn't be a long walk to the drill hall. It's changed a lot since 1966.

As I recall the main gate is on Illinois St.and the Drill Hall just a short walk from there....next to the gate is the visitors center and the small NEX and McPon hall

I'm leaving for GL in a couple of hours and I have what is probably a stupid question. Which drill hall do they use for the PIR? I'm thinking it's the Midway Ceremonial Drill close to the main Gate, but not sure. Hopefully someone's online this morning.
