No More "Sailor in a Box" - From RTC- Posted 5 Sept 2019
Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

We talk about Holiday Routine at Boot Camp - here's the skinny
Sunday/Holiday Routine allows recruits to attend religious services and observe Federal holidays. From 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. recruits are able to: attend religious services, read and study, hygiene, perform uniform upkeep, write and read letters, or clean their rack and personal locker.
RTC is making important changes to polices regarding PIR Guest Access as well as Bag Checks and Restriction Policies. Take the time to read thru these and be prepared when you head to Great Lakes for PIR.

Letters - I see a good share of posts talking about letters, and wanted to add some advice. Send lots of them! Your child needs to hear from you regularly in some form. I found myself running out of things to write about, so I came up with a routine. I write a few sentences or paragraphs sharing updates about the family and friends, people we have seen, comments his friends made to us, and anything else he might have an interest in that occurred. I then try to include a copy and paste of a Wikipedia article of something or someone that interests either him or me. I find a relevant news article (nothing related to politics, the military, or grisly murders), a funny or weird article, and anything relevent to a comment he may have made. I add a few jokes and always close out on an upbeat note. He says the jokes are some of his favorites, because he shares them with everyone - even the Commanders. Keep everything clean, and remember that while mail is private, the Commanders will be looking over their shoulders for contraband as they open things up. Don't send anything that will get them in trouble, but send lots of mail!
Mike - Our son is still in the rehab ward (RCU - Recruit Convalescing Unit) from an injury to his sciatic nerve in his leg. He reported to Great Lakes the first of February, finished his processing week, and was put on medical hold. He is close to getting out of there, we hope. The RCU is a great place for your son to spend time and heal. He will still be required to perform many of the daily recruit tasks such as PT and education, and will be given a job based on his current physical limitations. He will still be learning protocals and will be required to display military bearing, but the mood is less stressful and condusive to healing. If he (and the rest of his bunkmates) perform well, they will be given phone time. We have received a couple of lengthy phone calls from our son, and they made us feel much better. You will receive an address for him very soon, and when you do, send lots of letters. The mail is delivered much more frequently, not just on Saturdays. When our son is deemed fit, he will join another division and begin his boot camp where he left off - week 1 - with a head start on all of the other recruits in his division. He has already completed much of the required learning for the first two years of his career. The RCU time is not wasted, and should be viewed by you and your son as an opportunity to excel! Encourage him to keep progressing whenever you write him. Good luck to you and your son!
yes she did....
Thanks, Paul. Did your daughter get to do the PIR at a later time with her new Div?
my daughter had severe stress fractures and was delayed 6 weeks....went on to complete her enlistment in 2010 and is currently going to school on her GI Bill benefits.
We just got a call from our son. He told us that he broke his left pinky and is having surgery today to fix it. He is going to be delayed 6-8 weeks (depending on bone healing and rehab) and then he said he would join a new Div and graduate later. I failed, however, to ask him what his mailing address would be during his rehab. Does anyone have any experience with this?
well....a man has to have his priorities !!! LOL.....
Paul............all the wife and I got was a phone call and a couple of letters, the GF got all of the "important" calls and mail..........LOL.
Nominated and voted by the division. No, it will not hurt him during his career.
Hey all - My SR thinks he is in line to be nominated for Honor Recruit for his division. Does anyone know exactly what that is? From what I understand, each division has one honor recruit that is acknowledged at PIR. True? I also assume that this will not hurt him when being considered for advancement throughout his Navy career. True? Anything I am missing?
