No More "Sailor in a Box" - From RTC- Posted 5 Sept 2019

Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

We talk about Holiday Routine at Boot Camp - here's the skinny

Sunday/Holiday Routine allows recruits to attend religious services and observe Federal holidays. From 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. recruits are able to: attend religious services, read and study, hygiene, perform uniform upkeep, write and read letters, or clean their rack and personal locker.

Important RTC/PIR Changes

RTC is making important changes to polices regarding PIR Guest Access as well as Bag Checks and Restriction Policies. Take the time to read thru these and be prepared when you head to Great Lakes for PIR.

We heard from our son again today. He has transferred to RCU and will be there until he's recovered from the broken finger. We have a new mailing address. Gonna be a longer wait, but more so for him than us.

Ken.....Congratulations to your Son on his choice...and a Salute to your dad for his service! I'm sure that he is looking down with great pride...

Bill....Your son should have his E-3 at P.I.R. He will know as he will have to have his rank insignia sewn on for it! Everyone is an E-1 until Graduation.....

Bill - Don't bet on him having E3 at PIR.  Usually they will put on the strips at their school command (ie Corry Station for you).

It all deals with "different color" money.  It's just a government bureaucratic shuffle.  It is the future command responsibility/cost for the strips, not Great Lakes boot camp.  Yes, I know you'll say, "but others have stripes in boot camp".  Yea, it comes out of a "different color" money pot.

Welcome to the strange world of the government that never makes sense.....

I just got the "Kid in a Box" and it contained all the DEP and BC paperwork. I went thru every page because of the stories I have read here. No less than 3 times on three different forms it spelled out that he was an E3 at time he swore in before leaving for BC. He had college credit as well as 4 years of NJROTC, the last one as the CO/XO. I know he will be an E1 while in BC, but hopefully it will be enough to get him his E3 at PIR...Good Luck to Gene and his daughter.

The GOOD news is we got "the" letter and he loves BC. Obviously, we feel much better now that we've heard from him.

Thanks to all the Dads that make the site possible...

Son was also E3 in BC, however was caried as an E1 until PIR when he was allowed to wear his uniform with the correct rank on it. Unitl they pass battle stations they are all considered recruits (E1). If she is sure that her records are wrong she should check with her RDC, you could try to speak with her recruiter to make sure the paperwork went in, but be prepared for them to say that they cannot go into any details due to privicy laws/regulations. But basically she should have a copy of her enlistment contract, so check that and see what it says since that will be carry a lot of the weight to change things.

My SR has PIR on Friday 3/30/12. She wrote us and said that they have her graduating at an E-1, and not an E-3 that she qualified for(collage credits) upon enlisting into the Navy. Does anyone know who we should contact to get this matter resolved?

Comment by Chuck on March 25, 2012 at 10:08pm

The recruits only have time on Sundays to write.

My son has been in boot camp 4 weeks and we just got our first letters. there were 3 of them on Friday, and 2 were obviously weeks old. My wife had already assumed he wouldn't be writing!  So all dads new on the site, just be patient as you are waiting to hear news.  It appears there mail system is reeeeeealy slow.

Robert - thanks very much for the comments re: RCU. In this day and age of instant gratification, learning patience in communications is difficult to say the least. Your post made both me and my wife feel much more at ease.
